About me

Introduction:

I'm Jen Brown - Step-By-Step Counselling & Therapies, a professional Person-Centred and Integrative Counsellor/Psychotherapist, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Holistic Therapist, holding a Level 5 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Diploma in NLP and qualifications in CBT, Mindfulness and Holistic Therapies.

I have been a therapist in Bridgnorth, Shropshire since 2009 and have built a thriving private practice with clients often contacting me on recommendation of my services. I have extensive experience working with adults, adolescents, couples and families, am employed part-time as a School Counsellor and offer private counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and holistic therapies from my confidential therapy room. This private and tranquil space is based in Oldbury Wells, Bridgnorth, Shropshire and is easily accessible from, Shrewsbury, Telford, Ludlow, Wolverhampton, Kidderminster, Cleobury Mortimer, Dudley, Much Wenlock, Broseley and the surrounding areas. If distance, mobility or travel is an issue for you, I can offer my therapies online via Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp Video Call, Zoom, Teams and of course via telephone.

Your initial sessions will form our introduction, contract and assessment, followed by bespoke therapy and suggested plan for moving forward, taking 1 hour. At the end of this session we should have a good understanding of presenting issues and suggestd areas to be worked on, should you wish to continue your therapy.  Thereafter, each 60 minute session consists of bespoke therapy, tailored to your needs, with the emphasis of working at your pace but also being as effective as possible each time. I work flexible hours, with both daytime, evening and weekend appointments, work closely with local GP Practices receiving regular referrals and accommodate private healthcare referrals. I also offer bespoke corporate packages to organisations and businesses and provide Supervision to other Counsellors/Therapists and Counselling/Therapy to training student Counsellors.

I also work with Perry & Phillips Funeral Directors, Bridgnorth, to offer a free bereavement counselling service. These group sessions are held monthly and can be of great support at such a difficult time - please contact Perry & Phillips for further information. During the current COVID-19 restrictions, these group sessions are not taking place - instead I am contacting those in need of support by telephone or video call.

Therapies available:

Person-Centred/Integrative Counselling/Psychotherapy, provides a safe space for you to be understood, respected, and listened to empathically without judgement. Through exploring your issues and feelings, you can begin to better understand yourself and identify areas to change and strengthen. Step by step, you will work through those areas, be given strategies, methods to use and explore different approaches, to help you make lasting changes and improve your overall well-being. A range of theories and modalities such as; Person-Centred/Humanistic Therapy, CBT, Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic, meditation/relaxation techniques, may be used to provide the right therapy for you.

Bereavment Counselling, offers a safe place to explore your feelings and thoughts following the loss of a loved one.  Working together, we can explore coping strategies and techniques to help you come to terms with your loss, in time, and find a way forward.  This is a respectful service, taking into consideration the appropriate pace for you.

Hypnotherapy is an effective form of therapy used to treat conditions, issues or change unhelpful habits. It harnesses the power of suggestion to encourage positive change, whilst the client is in an ‘altered state of awareness and relaxation’. This relaxed state occurs naturally; the state between consciousness and sleep, when immersed in music, reading a book, focused or in deep concentration. Deep relaxation techniques are used to facilitate this tranquil state, allowing the subconscious mind to receive positive suggestions in order to communicate with the conscious mind and bring about the change clients are seeking. Clients are always in control, working with images, events and memories which are meaningful, safe and appropriate. An Eriksonian approach is used with evidence-based techniques. This ensures a professional, safe and ethically robust environment for effective therapy with a wide range of issues and challenges, promoting long-lasting change. I offer single sessions and also Hypnotherapy Programmes, which are a set number of sessions of Hypnotherapy, Counselling, Psychotherapy and specific strategies and techniques.

Holistic Therapies - reiki and reiki crystal healing are complementary/holistic, energy-based healing therapies which support and encourages natural self-healing abilities; whilst promoting a feeling of deep relaxation, harmony and well-being. These holistic therapies work on the principle that illness or dis-ease and emotional trauma is created by physical, mental or emotional imbalance in a person’s life force energy. It reaches beyond the physical symptoms to bring forth the root cause, working on all levels to support and enhance the body’s own natural self-healing abilities. They are believed to help balance the body’s natural energy systems; helping to correct energy flow through the meridians, channels, chakras, auras as needed; to bring an improved sense of health, vitality and well-being. Boosting the body’s innate ability to heal itself, helping to alleviate the effects of pain and suffering; leaving you more able to cope with the stresses and strains of daily living. These relaxing treatments can be combined with counselling/psychotherapy for a truly holistic approach to improve your well-being. Please see my website www.reiki-roots.co.uk for further information.

If you disclose information about terrorist or criminal offences I have a professional obligation to tell outside agencies.

So could you benefit from Counselling/Psychotherapy?

Realising you may need some extra support can be difficult to accept, but this is the first step in the right direction.

Have you experienced?

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • A loss, such as bereavement, loss of a relationship or friendship
  • Depression
  • Abuse
  • A trauma
  • Health issues
  • Work issues
  • Bullying or friendship issues
  • Low self-esteem or low self-confidence
  • Addiction problems
  • Anger issues
  • Obsessive thoughts

If you are experiencing any of these difficulties, this is exactly the time when person-centred/integrative counselling and psychotherapy can help.

So what's involved?

Your 60 minute initial session will form our introduction, contract and assessment, where both parties will decide whether this form of therapy is right for you. During this initial session, you will of course have opportunity to explore presenting issues and be given opportunity to reflect on areas to focus and be given suggestions on a way forward for you.

The therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is paramount, so I am always guided by whether you feel you wish to continue therapy with me, if needed. Any subsequent sessions are generally 1 hour, but can sometimes be longer if required, and each session is tailored to your needs at the time. At the end of each session you will be asked if you wish to continue with your therapy journey. You are an individual and will be treated and respected as that - there are no limits to the number of sessions required or indeed an ‘average’ number needed - your therapy is as individual as you are. I work at your pace, but am also mindful of achieving as much as possible in all our sessions.

Person-centred/integrative therapy offers a safe environment where you can explore yourself and life’s issues without fear of rejection or judgement. In time, you will begin to understand yourself, your strengths and weaknesses and identify how you can move forward and make changes to enhance your life and individual experience. Adapting your coping strategies, learning new skills, understanding what is in your control and how to let go of what is not working for you can simply transform the way you look at and handle situations - which can ultimately change your life.

So could you benefit from Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy can be extremely effective for numerous issues, such as anxiety, stress, low confidence, phobias, weight loss, quitting smoking, IBS, insomnia, performance management,  plus much more.

What to expect from your Hypnotherapy session?

Your initial session will form our introduction, contract and assessment, followed by Hypnotherapy and a personalised treatment plan, taking up to 90 minutes. At the end of this session you will have a good understanding of how hypnotherapy works for you and we will discuss the plan forward for any future sessions. Issues are treated on an individual bespoke basis, with no pre-determined number of sessions, however my specific 'Hypnotherapy Programmes' are a set number of sessions. Programmes include: 'Anxiety and Stress Relief'', Confidence and Self-Esteem Building', 'Sleep Well', 'IBS Relief', 'Beat Your Phobia', 'Alcohol Awareness', ‘Stop Smoking’, ‘Weight-Loss’ and 'Gastric Band Weight-Loss'.

Further hypnotherapy sessions are generally up to 90 minutes long, tailored to your specific requirements and the goals you wish to achieve. As an experienced Counsellor and Psychotherapist, you can be assured of a professional and ethical hypnotherapy service, where effective therapy takes place.

So could you benefit from Holistic Therapies?

I offer Holistic Therapies - reiki healing, reiki crystal healing and distant healing.

Reiki is a complimentary or holistic, energy-based healing therapy which supports and encourages natural self-healing abilities; whilst promoting a feeling of deep relaxation, harmony and well-being. It is believed to help balance the body’s natural energy systems, helping to correct energy flow through the meridians, channels, chakras and auras as needed; to bring an improved sense of health, vitality and well-being. Boosting the body’s innate ability to heal itself, helping to alleviate the effects of pain and suffering, leaving you more able to cope with the stresses and strains of daily living.

Intuitively chosen crystals can be used in reiki crystal healing, to further complement the healing process. These deeply relaxing therapeutic treatments can also be blended with conventional therapies, such as counselling and psychotherapy, if considered beneficial.

What to expect from your Reiki or Reiki Crystal Healing Session?

Your initial session will form our introduction, contract and consultation, followed by reiki healing, feedback and personalised well-being suggestions, taking 90 mimutes. Further healing sessions are bespoke, tailored according to your needs, generally taking 90 minutes. Each session will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and re-energised with a greater sense of well-being.

Reiki healing and reiki crystal healing can be used to help with: anxiety, bereavement, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disorders, disease and illness, depression, emotional trauma, generalised anxiety disorder, grief, hormonal imbalance, immune system disorders, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, migraine, pain, panic attacks, physical injury, relaxation, spirituality, stress, trauma,

* This is a non-exhaustive list. Reiki can complement medical care, help alleviate side effects of medical treatments (GP/Consultant consent where possible) and can be used as an additional preventive healthcare system but does not substitute medical care and treatment. Reiki Practitioners do not diagnose conditions, prescribe or perform medical treatment, nor interfere with the treatment of a GP/Consultant/Specialist. Always seek medical advice from a qualified medical practitioner.

For more in-depth information on how reiki healing or reiki crystal healing could help you, please see my website - www.reiki-roots.co.uk and facebook page - www.facebook.com/reikirootsuk.

So what to do next?

Sometimes acknowledging you may need support is the hardest step. The next step is to ask.

Please feel free to contact me via email, text or call me on 07967797786 for an informal chat to discuss any aspects of the therapies I offer.  Should you then decide if therapy with Step-By-Step Counselling & Therapies is right for you we can arrange your initial assessment and therapy session at my private practice, or via Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp Video Call, Zoom, Teams or telephone. Your enquiry will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Member organisations

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
