About me

Struggling with anxiety, racing thoughts or cycles of overthinking and self-criticism? Maybe you’ve been trying to hold everything together, yet inside you feel exhausted, low or disconnected from who you used to be. You don’t have to face this alone. With the right support, it is possible to feel calmer, clearer and more like yourself again.

I’m Helen Thorpe, an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist based in Tooting, South West London, offering both in-person counselling and online therapy across the UK.

I often work with people who are:

  • Caught in racing thoughts, anxiety or burnout
  • Feeling low, unmotivated or unsure where life is heading
  • Managing ADHD and struggling with focus or self-criticism
  • Stuck in patterns of perfectionism, shame or people-pleasing
  • Navigating big life changes — becoming a parent, ending a relationship, finding new direction
  • Carrying grief, loss or unresolved pain from the past

In our sessions, I offer a warm, grounded and collaborative space where you can slow down, make sense of what’s happening, and begin to heal the parts of yourself that feel hidden, overwhelmed or burdened.

Whether you’re seeking short-term support or a deeper exploration of long-held patterns, therapy can help you reconnect with yourself and move forward with more confidence and ease.

How I Work
My integrative approach means we can draw on a range of therapeutic tools to meet your needs. I offer:

  • Person-centred therapy – a warm, non-judgmental space where you’re truly heard
  • Psychodynamic insight – understanding how early experiences shape current patterns
  • A flexible toolkit – including CBT, mindfulness, inner child work, Gestalt and creative methods

This allows us to move between emotional depth and practical strategies, depending on what feels most supportive each session.

A Note on Perinatal Mental Health
I have a special interest in supporting women and partners during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood — a time that can bring joy, identity shifts, loss and anxiety. Therapy can be a space to process all of it, without judgment.

Sessions are available in a comfortable therapy room in Tooting (with walk-and-talk options), or online via Zoom.

I’m a registered member of the BACP and work in line with their ethical framework, offering steady, compassionate support as you begin to move forward at your own pace.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, accredited by the BACP. My additional training includes an OCN Level 4 accreditation in Perinatal Mental Health, with a focus on supporting pregnancy, birth trauma, postnatal depression, and infant loss. I am also a qualified Life Coach, and a Certified Infant Loss Professional through the Foundation for Infant Loss.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work in accordance with their ethical framework. I have enhanced DBS clearance and full professional liability and public insurance.

Professional Background
Before training as a therapist, I spent over a decade working in the corporate world in London and New York within the property and construction industries. After experiencing burnout and identity loss, I sought therapy, an experience that deeply influenced my decision to retrain as a counsellor.

I have experience working within NHS services, where I supported individuals dealing with suicidal thoughts, self-harm, complex trauma, and emotional crisis. This work strengthened my skills in assessment, safeguarding, risk management, and ethical signposting.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
