About me

I'm Dr Gillian Findlay, a Clinical Psychologist based in North East Scotland. I specialise in couples and relationship therapy in Aberdeen and online across the UK. I can help you understand what's really going on in your relationship difficulties or family issues and find a way forward.

The people I support feel stuck in their relationship, perhaps caught in the same arguments, or struggling to connect the way they used to. Sometimes a life change, such as illness, loss, or family stress, shifts something between people. You might feel lonely even though you're together, or like you're walking on eggshells - never quite sure how a conversation will go. There may have been affairs or other betrayals causing lasting pain and disconnection.

While much of my work is with couples, I also work with siblings, parents and adult children, and people who want to understand why they keep running into the same difficulties in their close relationships.

Clinical Psychology is a doctoral-level profession regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. My Professional Doctorate was built around extensive clinical placements across NHS services including adult mental health, physical health, neuropsychology, child and adolescent services, and learning disabilities services. I am trained and experienced in several evidence-based therapies and in how to draw on whichever approach best fits what's happening for you. I also bring a working understanding of the wider mental health and life challenges that often sit beneath relationship difficulties, such as anxiety, low mood, trauma, or grief, even when our focus stays on the relationship itself.

The way I work is collaborative and transparent. You'll always know what we're working on and why. I share my understanding and approach as we go and check in with you about what's helpful.

Reaching out takes courage. Whether you're certain therapy is right for you or just curious, I encourage you to get in touch. I offer a free 15-minute introductory call, with no pressure to continue, to talk it through and see if working together feels right.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, an MSc in Social Work and a BSc in Psychology.

My practice as a Clinical Psychologist is informed by twenty-three years of experience across health, mental health and social care, in roles ranging from direct care work to social work with children and families.

For couples and relationship work, I have additional specialist training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (externship), which helps partners understand emotional patterns and build secure connection, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 2), a research-based approach to communication and conflict.

My doctoral training also included a Foundation in Systemic Family Therapy (Association of Family Therapy), alongside training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and narrative approaches - all of which I draw on where helpful for individual difficulties that come up within the relational work.
