About me

I am Esther Fernández, a child-centred Play Therapist and Supervisor, passionate about supporting children to feel understood, accepted and confident in being themselves.

I offer a warm, safe and non-judgemental space where children can explore their emotions, make sense of difficult experiences and develop the emotional resources they need to thrive. I believe that every child has their own way of communicating and that play provides a powerful language through which children can express experiences and work through challenges at their own pace.

I work with children experiencing anxiety, emotional and behavioural difficulties, trauma, relationship challenges and difficulties associated with neurodivergence. My approach is child centred, tailored to each child’s individual needs, recognising that behaviour often communicates feelings and experiences that may be difficult to put into words.

A distinctive part of my practice is Animal Assisted Play Therapy® with Fresa, my therapy dog. The relationship children develop with Fresa can create unique opportunities for connection, emotional expression and confidence. Her gentle, accepting presence can help children feel more at ease and offer a different way of engaging in the therapeutic process. Through play and interaction, children may explore relationships, experience acceptance and discover their own strengths in a natural and meaningful way.

Alongside individual play therapy and Animal Assisted Play Therapy®, I offer Filial Therapy, parent consultations and ongoing parental support. I believe that parents are essential partners in helping children thrive. I work collaboratively with families (and schools when appropriate) to develop a deeper understanding of their child’s needs, explore what may be happening beneath their behaviour and identify supportive ways forward.

My aim is not simply to address difficulties, but to help children feel valued for who they are, strengthen their relationships and develop a greater sense of emotional wellbeing.

I understand that seeking support for your child can feel like a big step. You may be worried about their emotional wellbeing, unsure about what is happening or simply feel that something is not quite right.

You do not need to wait until difficulties become overwhelming, nor do you need to have all the answers before reaching out.

I welcome an initial complimentary phone conversation with parents who are considering support for their child, offering an opportunity to discuss concerns and explore together how play therapy can support them.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a registered Play Therapist and Supervisor with a Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy and a Postgraduate Certificate in Play Therapy by the University of Leeds Becket. I also hold a BA in Childhood Practice and an HNC in Child Care and Early Years Education.

My additional training includes:

  • AutPlay® training
  • Animal Assisted Play Therapy® Level I
  • Filial Therapy (Parent and Child)
  • BAPT reg number 1710
  • International Animal Assisted Play Therapist®️ 0048/R

I have experience supporting children with a wide range of emotional, behavioural and relational difficulties, including anxiety, bereavement, loss and separation, emotional regulation, trauma and experiences that may affect their sense of safety, confidence and relationships.

A significant part of my experience has been supporting neurodivergent children and children who may experience the world, relationships and communication differently. I aim to understand each child’s individual strengths, needs and way of communicating, as well as difficulties.

My practice is child-centred and relationship-based, with a strong emphasis on creating emotional safety, acceptance and trust. I also offer professional supervision, supporting reflective practice and child-centred therapeutic work.
