About me

I offer both short term counselling and also open-ended therapy online (zoom). I have a broad background of experience working with a range of clients in organisation settings and then 10 years in private practice, with clients in the UK, Europe and internationally.

I offer a safe, non judgmental, confidential space for you to explore issues that are perhaps causing depression, anxiety, emotional/psychological pain or addiction based processes. We would work together to allow you to move forward.

My time is divided between my private practice:

General: www.davidjsutherland.co.uk

A practice specialising in Enmeshment:

Focussed: www.enmeshment-therapy.com

A co-therapy therapeutic and practical space with another therapist:

Collaborative: www.liminal-place.com

For the past 15+ years, I have been fortunate to meet many experienced trainers, facilitators, mentors and supervisors in the field of psychotherapy, who have informed and continue to influence my clinical practice.

Training, qualifications & experience

After 4 years of training, I qualified at the Metanoia Institute in Gestalt Psychotherapeutic Counselling.

I then completed a 2 year postgraduate psychosexual and relationship therapy training.

I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and the NCIP (National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists).

I adhere to the BACP code of Ethics.

As with any discipline focused on growth, I continue to explore learnings, experiential research and dialogue with others, in the field of psychotherapy. A recent training was in the US with Dr Ken Adams on his approach to working with Enmeshment.

At present I am researching the impact of family enmeshment and its impact on Individuation, both in a psychological and Jungian sense. To support this study I consult with other therapists and teachers internationally.

National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
