About me

Life can feel overwhelming at times.

You may be struggling with anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship difficulties, loss of confidence, past experiences that continue to affect you, or simply a sense that something isn't working in your life anymore. Perhaps you've been carrying things on your own for a long time and have reached a point where you know something needs to change.

"Much of my work centres on helping people improve communication — with themselves, their partners and the important people in their lives."

Seeking counselling can feel like a big step, particularly if you've never spoken to anyone about what you're going through. My aim is to provide a warm, supportive and professional space where you can talk openly, make sense of your experiences, and begin moving towards the life you want to live.

I am Darren Northeast, a qualified Integrative Counsellor and Registered Member of the BACP. I work with adults and couples in person. across the UK.

Whether you're facing a specific challenge or simply feel stuck, counselling can offer the opportunity to better understand yourself, improve your relationships and create lasting change.

How I Work
As an Integrative Counsellor, I draw upon a range of therapeutic approaches and tailor our work to your individual needs, circumstances and goals.

I believe that feeling genuinely heard and understood is one of the most important parts of therapy. My approach is collaborative, down-to-earth and non-judgemental. I won't tell you what to do or offer quick fixes. Instead, we'll work together to understand what's happening, explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and find ways forward that feel right for you.

Every client is different. Some people come to therapy wanting support with a specific issue, while others are looking to better understand themselves and their relationships. Whatever brings you to counselling, we will work at a pace that feels comfortable and manageable.

Areas I Can Help With
I work with a wide range of issues, including:

Anxiety and excessive worry
Stress and burnout
Depression and low mood
Relationship difficulties
Couples counselling
Communication issues
Trauma and difficult life experiences
Low self-esteem and confidence
Anger and emotional regulation
Bereavement and loss
Family difficulties
Men's mental health
Life transitions and identity issues
Work-related stress
Personal development and self-awareness
Anxiety, Stress and Overwhelm
Many clients come to counselling feeling exhausted by constant worry, overthinking or pressure.

Anxiety can affect every area of life, from relationships and work to sleep and self-confidence. Together we can explore the causes of your anxiety, understand the patterns that maintain it, and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions.

The aim is not simply to cope, but to feel more grounded, confident and able to engage fully with life.

People come to counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a specific difficulty such as anxiety, relationship challenges, loss or trauma. At other times, therapy is less about fixing a problem and more about understanding yourself better, celebrating how far you've come, recognising your strengths, and creating a deeper sense of purpose, fulfilment and gratitude in your life.

Relationship and Couples Counselling
Relationships can be deeply rewarding, but they can also become difficult when communication breaks down or old patterns take hold.

Couples often seek support when they find themselves having the same arguments repeatedly, struggling with trust, feeling emotionally disconnected or facing major life changes together.

Counselling provides a space where both people can feel heard and understood. Rather than taking sides, I help couples explore what is happening beneath the surface and develop healthier ways of communicating and relating to one another.

Men's Mental Health
Many men have spent years feeling they should deal with problems alone.

As a result, anxiety, stress, anger, low mood and relationship difficulties can build quietly over time. Seeking support is not a sign of weakness; it is often one of the strongest decisions a person can make.

I offer a space where men can talk openly about what is really going on, gain greater self-understanding and develop more effective ways of managing life's challenges.

What to Expect
Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting, and it's completely normal to feel uncertain before making contact.

Our initial session gives us the opportunity to discuss what has brought you to therapy, what you hope to achieve, and whether we feel like a good fit to work together.

There is no pressure and no obligation.

If we decide to continue, we will create a safe and confidential therapeutic relationship where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences openly and honestly.

I offer:

Face-to-face counselling
Individual counselling
Couples counselling
Sessions are available by appointment.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange an initial session, please get in touch.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

I am very interested in working with couples who may be experiencing difficulties in their relationship due to communication (lack of), parenting, stress faced by working parents, boredom, past conditioning, reconnection etc.

I'm available to support ALL clients, and here to hold space for everyone who reaches out to me. Being a male therapist means some men feel more comfortable in sharing man-to-man - therefore I work with quite a number of male clients. Most clients express a lift in their symptoms, worries and concerns within 5 / 6 sessions - but that's not always the case.

Why choose a male counsellor? -

The benefits of working with a male counsellor over a female one depend on individual preferences and needs. Some potential benefits of working with a male counsellor include:
- Different Perspective: A male counsellor may offer a unique perspective on issues, which can be helpful for clients who want to explore different viewpoints.
- Comfort Level: Some clients may feel more comfortable discussing certain topics with a male counsellor, depending on their personal experiences and preferences.
- Therapeutic Relationship: The most important factor is finding a counsellor with whom you can build a strong therapeutic relationship, regardless of their gender.

Key Considerations
- *Gender is Not a Determinant*: A counsellor's effectiveness is not determined by their gender, but rather by their skills, experience, and approach.
- Client-Counsellor Match: Finding a counsellor who understands and respects your needs, values, and goals is crucial.
- Personal Preferences: Ultimately, the decision to work with a male or female counsellor depends on your personal preferences and what you feel most comfortable with.
