About me
Sometimes, it can feel really lonely when you, or your child, are struggling with their mental health. It can feel hopeless and impossible, and hard to talk about.
I am a qualified music therapist and I specialise in adolescent mental health and trauma. I currently work with young people who have experienced abuse, who are looked after (foster/adoption/local authority) and who self harm and are at risk of suicide.
In music therapy, talking is welcome but not a requirement. The musical aspect of music therapy can include playing instruments, singing, listening to music and songwriting but there is no pressure and no requirement to have any musical skills. Music Therapy is not about performance, but about using music as an expressive tool.
My approach is predominantly psychodynamic, which means that I believe our past experiences impact our current ones, and I consider the role of the unconscious mind, however I integrate other schools of thought flexibly to ensure that the sessions are tailored to the client. My work is always client lead, meaning we work at a pace that feels ok to you and you take the lead.
Every young person exists within a context and therefore, I strongly believe it’s important to remember this in the work. I offer parent meetings and consultation on wider mental health topics such as how to support at home, and with referrals, such as to CAMHS. However, I don’t share information from the sessions without the young person’s consent (excluding safeguarding).
Training, qualifications & experience
I qualified as a Music Therapist from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2021. This was a two-year, full-time masters.
Since qualifying, I have specialised in working with adolescents who require support with their mental health. This includes children and young people who are looked after and who have experienced trauma and abuse. Most recently, I have lead a team of psychological therapists at a school specialised for children with additional social, emotional and mental health needs. Large parts of this work focussed on trauma-informed care and working with those who self-harmed or at risk of suicide.
I have also trained as a Senior Mental Health Lead for schools, meaning that I develop schools’ approaches to mental health in line with the 8 principles outlined by Public Health England and Department for Education.
I have Level 4 Safeguarding training, meaning I have a rigorous knowledge and understanding around statutory responsibilities in keeping children safe. I have also done additional training in consent and the Mental Capacity Act to ensure I advocate for my client’s voice as much as possible.
