About me

Hi, my name is Carly Howitt. I am a fully qualified therapist with over 10 years experience working as a psychological therapist in the NHS. I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist accredited with the BABCP, and an Interpersonal Therapist, accredited with IPTUK. Accreditation with these services means I uphold the highest standard of training and ethics.

I also have extensive training in Compassion Focussed Therapy (with Deborah Lee), and often find an enormous benefit to applying this approach with clients, particularly those with a trauma background who find themselves to be their own worst critic.

If you’re considering therapy, you may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally drained, or unsure why things feel so difficult right now. You might be coping on the outside while struggling internally, or finding that the same patterns, thoughts, or feelings keep showing up despite your best efforts to manage them.

I offer a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space where you can slow things down, make sense of what’s happening for you, and begin to feel more in control of your life again.

Therapy with me is not about being “fixed” or told what to do. It’s about being truly heard, understood and supported as you explore what’s holding you back and what you need to move forward. Together, we will work at your pace to understand your experiences, your emotions, and the impact they are having on your wellbeing, relationships and self-confidence.

What you can expect from working with me:

A warm, compassionate relationship where you feel safe to be yourself
Space to talk openly without fear of judgement
Support to understand difficult thoughts, emotions or behaviours
Help to identify unhelpful patterns and develop healthier ways of coping
Increased self-awareness, clarity and emotional resilience
A "tool kit" to essentially become your own therapist

Over time, many clients find they are better able to manage anxiety, feel more grounded, communicate more clearly, set boundaries, and respond to life’s challenges with greater confidence and self-compassion.

By working together, you may begin to:

Feel less overwhelmed and more emotionally balanced
Gain clarity about yourself and your experiences
Break free from patterns that no longer serve you
Improve your relationship with yourself and others
Feel more confident in your choices and direction in life

Most importantly, therapy can help you feel more connected to who you are and what you need, allowing you to move forward with greater understanding and self-trust.

If you’re unsure whether therapy is right for you, that’s completely okay. Taking the first step can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. I welcome you to get in touch to see whether working together feels like the right fit for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I graduated with a First Class honors degree in a Psychology from the University of Sussex in 2010.

I went on to work as a Support Worker on a dementia ward for the NHS. During this time, I also volunteered as a Support Worker in the Adult Community Mental Health Team, gaining experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

I then worked for 3 years as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner in an NHS talking therapies service, before gaining a distinction in a Post Graduate Diploma to become a CBT therapist at the university of Southampton.

Since then I have worked as a senior psychological therapist in the NHS. During this time, I have undertaken various additional courses in mindfulness, extensive training in Compassion Focussed Therapy, applying CBT to best help those with neurodivergence, understanding the link between mental heath and long term health conditions, and multiple additional courses on Complex Trauma.

I have also qualified as an IPT Therapist, and am therefore now also registered with IPTUK.

Whilst working within the NHS, as a Senior Psychological Therapist, I was responsible for supervising and training other CBT therapists.
