About me

Hello and welcome to my profile..

I am a fully qualified NCPS Accredited Counsellor working with clients online via Zoom and in person at my practise on Dartington Hall Estate near Totnes, Devon.

My clients come to work with a range of challenges including anxiety, depression, grief, loss, low self-esteem, shame, intrusive or obsessive thoughts, relationship issues, addictions, insecure attachment, Adult ADHD, Adverse Childhood Experiences and many aspects of the human condition.

Through listening, authenticity and sensitivity I offer an honest, supportive, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship in which you may feel comfortable and secure. We will develop the trust needed to explore the issues that bring you to counselling at your pace. The therapeutic relationship with your counsellor or therapist is unique and you need to feel comfortable and confident in it for counselling to be effective.

A space to be heard and truly listened to is a good starting point but sometimes we need more. As a therapist I believe it is important to be able to offer therapeutic interventions appropriate to your condition in response to your particular needs. Where appropriate I also share practical tools, strategies, resources and ideas that you can use to make your experience of life more workable.

Understanding our past, particularly the family systems and childhood circumstances in which we grew up and how they shaped our development can help illuminate our current condition and call us to develop greater self awareness and self compassion. We cannot change the past or control the future but we can work with how we feel and think in the present, here and now.

My professional training is in Integrative Counselling, integrating Person Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but my approach might be best described as holistic, taking account of all aspects of a person's being.

My work is heavily influenced by over ten years as a practitioner of Integrated Energy Healing (mind/body therapy) working at depth with Somatic awareness, Inner Child Healing, Entity Release and Ancestral Healing. Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) maps very well with these approaches to healing and my counselling work has benefited from adding IFS to my toolkit as an effective and accessable approach in the therapy room. I like Internal Family Systems Therapy a lot because it offers us ways of working at a deep level in therapy and also as part of our ongoing integration and self care.

It has been my experience with hundreds of clients that these are safe and effective approaches for personal healing and growth. Working with somatic awareness in the physical and emotional body keeps the work grounded and in the present. In the body we can connect with unconscious parts of our psyche and move towards greater self awareness, self acceptance, self compassion and wholeness.

Breathing and grounding exercises to close and integrate the experience ensure that you always leave the therapy room grounded, self-contained and fully present.

If any of the above seems strange or unfamiliar to you please do not worry. I have guided many people with no previous experience of therapy to achieve deep personal healing.  All it takes is a willingness to show up and be present to your own experience of 'how it is' in the present moment. That can take some courage but rest assured, we will go at your pace however slow or fast that may be.

If you are interested in working together we can arrange a free 15 minute Introductory Zoom Call to discuss what you need, address any questions you may have and consider if this work might be a good fit for you.

I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Ben
