Niki Costas Tanto, Psychotherapist (MBACP Accred, UKCP Reg)
I am a compassionate and caring professional, offering counselling and psychotherapy on an individual, couples basis. I run my private practice, Roohaz Counselling and Psychotherapy in central London.
The approach I use in my work is called Transactional Analysis (TA), founded by the renowned psychiatrist, Eric Berne, whose assumptions were:
- People are essentially born OK
- Everyone has the capacity to think
- People decide their own destiny and their decisions can be changed
TA offers a theory of the personality, a model of communication and a study of repetitive patterns. It can be short term usually through counselling, or longer term with psychotherapy.
In my work I also integrate aspects of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and psychodynamic approaches where appropriate.
Counselling offers you the opportunity to talk through your feelings and explore your options about problems you are currently experiencing. I work with you to support you to find solutions and make the right choices. Typically, counselling works over a shorter period of time such as 6 to 8 weekly sessions.
Psychotherapy is usually longer term and provides an in-depth exploration into deep seated issues from your past that have affected your life today. We work together to understand your sense of self and repeated patterns of feeling, thinking and behaviour. My aim is to help you to challenge self-limiting beliefs and behaviours, and move towards positive change to improve your life.
I welcome enquiries for any type of issue, for example: bereavement and loss; stress; anxiety; depression and low mood; lack of confidence; low self-esteem; relationships; work-related stress; phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
Each session is 50 minutes long. There is no limit to how many sessions you can have. After an initial assessment and depending on the presenting issue, we agree a therapeutic contract in which we may decide upon a short term, limited number of sessions, or longer term and open-ended work.
I also offer sessions over video conferencing using either Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts or FaceTime.

Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
UK Council for Psychotherapy
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
