Depression 'recognise those early signs'

‘Depression is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign you have been strong for too long’
Elizabeth Gilbert

In the 'work place', when things get difficult, we drive ourselves even harder, work longer hours, giving up family time. It’s easy to become completely burnt out, it’s a gradual slow process one we are not always aware of.

  • Continually tired
  • Lethargic
  • Becoming antisocial

Have you noticed someone you work with becoming more insular, lacking in energy, finding it more difficult to concentrate?

All signs that something is not right

Colleagues and friends may want to be supportive, but how best to respond?

It is important for them to have someone they can trust and talk with openly, when they feel ready. Sometimes talking with relatives is just impossible; you cannot force someone to express their distress, it will make it worse.

They may find it easier to communicate with a qualified Counsellor. Trust and respect are important; they can help to rebuild and maintain a sense of self- esteem, which mental distress can easily crush.

Don’t ignore the signs; make contact with your GP.

Is this happening to you?
