Counselling myth #2 – you have to be in crisis to seek therapy
It’s true that many people wait until they reach crisis point before coming into therapy and that this is a crucial time to be getting the help you need but counselling can help in other ways as well as offering emergency support. Some people become aware, for example, that there is something in their past which troubles them and which they’ve never addressed, having assumed that everyone else feels the same.
As they grow older and make contact with other people, they realise that perhaps their experience might be having an ongoing detrimental effect albeit at a low level. Others find themelves stuck in a bit of a rut and feeling restless without knowing why and still others find certain aspects of themselves puzzling and want to explore. All of these are good reasons to seek the help of a therapist – personal development is as legitimate a motivation as crisis.
