I was initially trained as a supervisor by the South East Supervision Group some years ago. I have now been supervising experienced psychotherapists and trainee psychotherapists for many years in Private Practice, in the NHS, Freedom from Torture, London and Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre, London.
My view of supervision is that it is a containing space for a psychotherapist to reflect upon their work with a patient and develop their technique and relating to the patient in appropriate and beneficial ways, as well as to share and benefit from the experience and views of a professional and experienced colleague. Supervision as therapist development applies psychoanalytic insight and wisdom to clinical work to the benefit of the patient's treatment and increases the therapist's awareness and clinical effectiveness.
