Supervision details

Supervision: 'To describe is to change'  Welcome. I am a qualified clinical supervisor offering supervision of counselling and psychotherapy for people in private practice, in organisations and for trainees or those studying as students of counselling. The supervision I offer is Integrative with an emphasis on a descriptive and experiential way of working. It can be difficult to find a supervisor with whom we have a good fit (this has certainly been my experience some of the time as a supervisee) but it can be hard to find our authentic therapeutic voice without the support and challenge of a supervisor we trust. This means that for me supervision is primarily a reflective space to view again & reconsider what happened in an interaction with a client as well as what might have been overlooked; to turn over what lingers and continues to impact you about the encounter with your particular client. Clarification comes by going over the detail of a piece of work. Supervision has more classically been about an over-seeing of the supervisee's work, whereas what is on offer from me is more existentially-inspired in it's concern with seeing-over the actual work – to see it over again. In the paying of close attention to the details of what happened, what is important emerges along with what may have been missed – like developing a photo from a negative. One of my main influences has been the humanistic & experiential methodology of Focusing as developed by Gendlin, and just as I use this with clients, it is a big part of how I help supervisees to get a sense of their client and what may be going on in the relationship and potentially blocking fuller contact with them.I have a broad range of theoretical strains that inform the particular supervision I offer. Aside from Gendlin's focus on the body and metaphor it is mainly psychodynamic (the Attachment ideas of Bowlby and the use of the imagination in Jung) and Mindfulness-based (exploring the attitude with which we approach experience, the power of simple presence and radical acceptance of this moment).I have a Diploma in Integrative Supervision and over a decade's clinical experience. The cost is normally £50 per supervision session during the day, but do also get in contact if you have financial constraints and have difficulty paying that as I offer reduced rates and low fees for some trainees and counselling students. Please get in contact if you have any questions, want to find out more or would like to make an initial supervisory session appointment to see if we would make a good pairing as your supervisor. I also offer a free 10-15 minute phone conversation if desired.I am based in the Practice Rooms, right in the heart of Exeter; but may also be available to see supervisees from my home located by The University of Exeter if that is more convenient.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
