Supervision details
A space to reflect, explore and grow
Even experienced counsellors need somewhere they can pause, reflect, ask questions and feel supported.
Hello, I'm Rodney, a qualified clinical supervisor and the person behind RedBird Counselling & Supervision.
I believe good supervision is about more than discussing caseloads or meeting professional requirements. It's about having a trusted professional relationship where you can reflect openly on your practice, explore challenges, celebrate progress and continue developing as a confident, ethical and compassionate practitioner.
At RedBird, I offer a welcoming, confidential and non-judgemental supervisory space where you can bring your questions, uncertainties, achievements and professional challenges without feeling that you need to have all the answers.
You don't have to know everything to be a good counsellor. Being willing to reflect, question and learn is part of what makes us effective practitioners.
Professional experience. Clinical understanding. Genuine support.
I bring over 16 years of professional experience in mental health, counselling and substance use, alongside my CPCAB Level 6 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision.
My professional background includes counselling, clinical supervision, clinical leadership and service development, with experience supporting practitioners working with individuals and families experiencing complex emotional and psychological difficulties.
I have particular expertise in co-occurring mental health and substance use difficulties, trauma-informed practice, risk assessment, safeguarding, harm reduction and relapse prevention.
Throughout my career, I've worked with counsellors and other professionals, supporting reflective practice, professional development, ethical decision-making and the delivery of safe and effective therapeutic interventions.
This experience has shaped my belief that supervision should be both professionally robust and genuinely supportive.
My approach to supervision
My approach is collaborative, reflective and grounded in compassion, curiosity and professional accountability.
I recognise that every practitioner brings their own knowledge, experiences, strengths and areas for development.
Rather than simply telling you what to do, I aim to create a space where we can think together, explore different perspectives and develop your confidence in making informed clinical decisions.
Our supervision may include:
- Reflecting on client work and therapeutic relationships
- Exploring complex presentations and clinical challenges
- Ethical dilemmas, professional boundaries and confidentiality
- Risk assessment, safeguarding and clinical responsibility
- Working with trauma, mental health and substance use
- Exploring the impact of client work on your own wellbeing
- Recognising personal responses and their influence on therapeutic practice
- Developing therapeutic skills, confidence and professional identity
- Identifying learning needs and continuing professional development
- Reflecting on achievements, strengths and areas for growth
- I believe supervision works best when there is trust, openness and mutual respect, alongside a shared commitment to safe, ethical and effective practice.
Supporting you as a practitioner and a person
Counselling can be deeply rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding.
There may be times when you feel uncertain about a clinical decision, affected by a client's experiences, challenged by professional responsibilities or simply in need of space to reflect.
Supervision should be somewhere you can bring these experiences honestly, knowing that you will be met with understanding, thoughtful challenge and professional support.
I value the importance of balancing support with appropriate challenge, recognising that professional growth often comes through curiosity, reflection and the willingness to consider different perspectives.
My aim is not to judge your practice, but to work alongside you in strengthening it.
Specialist clinical experience
My professional experience includes supporting people experiencing mental health difficulties, emotional distress, trauma and challenges with alcohol and substance use.
I have particular experience in situations where mental health and substance use difficulties overlap, including the complexities of risk, emotional regulation, relapse prevention and the impact of trauma.
I recognise the importance of understanding the whole person rather than focusing solely on symptoms, diagnoses or behaviours.
This perspective also informs my supervisory work, particularly when supporting practitioners managing complex client presentations and competing clinical responsibilities.
Qualifications and professional standards
My relevant qualifications include:
- CPCAB Level 6 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision
- Postgraduate Diploma in Substance Use & Substance Use Disorder Queen's University Belfast

Flexible supervision appointments
I offer individual clinical supervision through RedBird in Derry/Londonderry, with online and telephone appointments also available.
I understand that counsellors often balance client work, employment, professional development and personal commitments.
For this reason, I offer flexible appointments, including evenings and weekends, subject to availability.
Whether you're seeking a new supervisor, changing your existing supervision arrangements or exploring supervision for the first time, you're welcome to get in touch.
Taking the next step
Finding the right supervisor is an important professional decision.
I believe the supervisory relationship should be built on trust, openness, mutual respect and a shared commitment to learning and development.
If my approach resonates with you, I'd welcome an initial conversation to explore your supervision needs, professional background and whether working together would be a good fit.

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
