Psychotherapist/Clinical Supervisor

Supervision details

I offer clinical supervision for trainee and qualified counsellors who are looking for a reflective, supportive and relational space to explore their client work, professional development and therapeutic identity.

My supervision practice is informed by my experience as an integrative-relational psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, senior counselling lecturer and counselling trainer. I have completed specialist training in therapeutic counselling supervision and have extensive experience supporting counselling trainees through placement, skills development, ethical practice, case reflection and professional formation.

My approach to supervision is relational, reflective and collaborative. I see supervision as more than a space to review client work or check ethical practice, although these are important parts of the process. At its heart, supervision is a working relationship where supervisees can bring the whole experience of their practice, including uncertainty, confidence, stuckness, emotional responses, questions, ruptures, hopes and learning edges.

I am particularly interested in what happens between therapist and client, and also what happens between supervisor and supervisee as we reflect together. I pay close attention to relational process, countertransference, parallel process, use of self, boundaries, risk, identity, power and the emotional impact of the work. My aim is to help supervisees become more aware of what is happening in the room, in themselves, and within the wider context of the client’s life.

In supervision, I will often invite reflection on the client’s words, themes, patterns and emotional process, while also gently exploring what the work evokes in you as the practitioner. This may include noticing where you feel drawn in, protective, unsure, frustrated, disconnected, moved or overly responsible. These responses are not treated as mistakes, but as meaningful clinical information that can deepen understanding when explored safely.

My style is warm, respectful and gently challenging. I aim to create a space where supervisees can feel supported enough to be honest, while also encouraged to think critically and ethically about their practice. I value transparency, humility and curiosity, and I recognise that supervisees bring their own lived experience, training, culture, identity and developing therapeutic voice into the work.

Depending on your needs, supervision may include case discussion, ethical decision-making, risk reflection, safeguarding considerations, theoretical formulation, skills development, placement support, preparation for assessment, or exploration of professional confidence. I also support supervisees to think about endings, ruptures, diversity, anti-oppressive practice and the impact of organisational or placement settings on the therapeutic work.

I work integratively, with a person-centred and relational foundation. I may draw on attachment, psychodynamic ideas, trauma-informed thinking, CBT-informed reflection, creative approaches and Clarkson’s relational framework where useful. However, I do not see theory as something imposed onto the work. Rather, theory becomes useful when it helps us understand the client more deeply and supports you to respond with greater clarity, presence and ethical awareness.

My hope is that supervision becomes a place where you feel accompanied in your development, where your practice can be held with care, and where you can grow in confidence, depth and authenticity as a counsellor.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
