Working with risk presented by Professor Andrew Reeves

This workshop offers a two-hour opportunity to explore how we understand, assess and respond to risk in counselling and psychotherapy practice, including risk of suicide, self-harm and harm to others.

Rather than offering a checklist approach, the session encourages practitioners to think critically about the tensions between risk-averse practice and genuinely relational, client-centred work, drawing on current thinking, ethical frameworks and real-world practice dilemmas.

This is a cameras-on event, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect together on the implications for their own practice. They will leave with a clearer, more confident framework for holding risk conversations with clients, and for making sound, defensible decisions under pressure.

About the speaker

Andrew is Emeritus Professor in Counselling Professions and Mental Health at the University of Chester and has worked as a therapist and supervisor for nearly 40 years; much of that time has been spent thinking, writing and teaching about how we work safely and thoughtfully with risk in therapeutic practice.

He has written widely for the profession, including textbooks, journal articles and training materials, and continues to contribute to professional body discussions on ethics and practice standards.
