Refugees and asylum seekers often face complex experiences of trauma, loss, displacement, and adjustment that can significantly impact their mental health and well-being. While psychodynamic therapy offers a valuable framework for understanding these experiences, therapists frequently encounter unique challenges that require flexibility, cultural awareness, and adaptation beyond traditional therapeutic models.

This workshop explores the realities of working therapeutically with refugee and asylum-seeking clients, drawing on current research and clinical experience. Participants will gain insight into the emotional, cultural, and practical complexities that influence therapy, including trauma, language barriers, trust, transference and countertransference, and the importance of integrating psychoeducation and multidisciplinary support.

The session will also provide practical strategies for developing strong therapeutic alliances, working in culturally sensitive ways, and recognising when adaptations to practice are beneficial to meet clients’ needs.

Who should attend?

This workshop is suitable for:

  • Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists.
  • Mental health practitioners working with refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Students and trainees in counselling or psychotherapy.
  • Refugee support workers and community organisations.
  • Refugees and asylum seekers who wish to better understand the therapeutic process and what to expect from counselling.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the psychological impact of forced migration and displacement.
  • Recognise the challenges therapists face when working with refugee clients.
  • Explore ways to adapt psychodynamic practice while maintaining therapeutic integrity.
  • Learn practical approaches for building trust, cultural sensitivity, and effective therapeutic relationships.
  • Increase confidence in supporting refugees and asylum seekers through collaborative, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care.

The overall aim of the seminar is to promote greater understanding of the therapeutic needs of refugees and asylum seekers while equipping professionals with practical knowledge that enhances compassionate, effective, and ethically informed practice.
