Fragile Process (a one day introduction)
The concept of fragile process was originally proposed by Margaret Warner; a person-centered therapist based in Chicago. Essentially she proposes that clients who have experienced empathic failure in childhood develop a ‘fragile’ manner of processing experience. In my work with survivors of child abuse this is something which I have encountered frequently, although this is by no means exclusive to this client group.
If we apply this theory in our client work, the challenge for the therapist is to accurately empathise with the client and reflect back the client’s experience without any alteration or amendment. Arguably, the ultimate offering of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard.
During the day we will look at the basis of this theory and its links to Rogers’ ideas on client process. We will consider how fragile process manifests in the daily lives of our clients and reflect on our own possible experiences of the process. We will explore ways of working with fragile process and there will be time to discuss current client work.
