How I deliver therapy.

I give each client a total focus, giving advanced empathy, which enables every client to start healing and feeling better. I value each client as a unique individual and help each person to find their unused strengths.

You will be listened to, by me, in such a deep and caring, non-judgemental way that allows you to fully express and cope with your difficult emotions. And you will discover, through my gentle guidance and thoughtful questions, much more clarity in your thinking and develop options on what you need to do to heal.

I will work to your pace, with deep patience and compassion. I will enable you to feel more self-confident in facing your problems and stresses.

During my life I have experienced several mental health issues personally, which enables me to counsel from an authentic understanding of the depth of pain that clients can suffer.

My counselling style has successfully helped hundreds of clients. I will not only help you with your current issues; I will also enable you to have the long-term, increased self-awareness and self-confidence to cope with future challenges in your life, to become more resilient.

The most critical factor I provide to you: The Counselling Relationship.

The Counselling Relationship between client and counsellor is the most critical factor for successful counselling. It is crucial that the client can start to feel at ease in the sessions and I am skilled in helping all my clients to relax and use the sessions as a special, safe space in which to find a way through their problems.

I am highly skilled and experienced in developing an effective counselling relationship with every client, which is the foundation for helping you, the client, to start to heal.

My genuineness, empathy, caring style, and openness will help you relax and feel totally trusted. I have a passion for helping others find relief from their distress.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a registered member of the BACP, which ensures I adhere to best practice and ethics in my counselling, and that I continually develop my counselling skills.

Career background

In addition to counselling clients in a private capacity I counselled for nine years at a large Further Education College, where I helped hundreds of clients, including mature students, staff and young adults, with a wide range of issues.

Working for a hospice in a voluntary capacity for several years, I have assisted many bereaved clients. I am very effective in helping clients experiencing deep grief.

My extensive leadership training and coaching of individuals in the Fire Service gives me a unique ability to help others develop their true potential, and to help them overcome the mental obstacles holding them back from achieving their life goals. This combined with my qualifications in Coaching enables me to be an effective Coach.

During 30 years in the Fire Service my counselling skills were developed to help staff with mental and emotional issues. I also assisted firefighters following traumatic incidents as a Post Traumatic Stress Debriefer.

As a senior manager for many years I have a depth of experience in dealing with staff's mental health issues, and a detailed understanding of the challenges faced by managers and staff in organisations.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

I also offer outdoor therapy, where I accompany the client walking in the beautiful outdoors of the Lake District, whilst conducting the dialogue and therapy with the client. This is a highly effective method, as research has proven its efficacy, where connecting with nature and the outdoors empowers the client to get in touch with their thoughts and feelings.

I am very flexible in the manner in which I can deliver therapy. I offer face-to-face counselling at my home;  over the telephone or Facetime and Zoom.
