About me

I’m Tom, a qualified clinical counsellor, I am also trained in child and family psychology. I specialise in men's mental health.

I have a background in the military and experience of transition and mental health challenges, I understand how easy it is to suppress things and keep going - until it starts to affect you.

Many men I work with feel like they should be able to deal with things on their own.

On the outside, they often look like they’re coping - but underneath, they may feel overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or constantly on edge.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone - and you don’t have to carry it on your own.

Maybe you’re carrying anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, or struggling with habits that no longer serve you - but finding it hard to talk about it or know where to start.

How this shows up:

  • irritability or snapping at people
  • feeling mentally drained or burnt out
  • avoiding things or shutting down
  • struggling to switch off
  • feeling disconnected from yourself or others

How I work

My approach is calm, grounded, and straightforward.

I understand that for many men, talking doesn’t always come naturally - so we work in a way that feels comfortable, without pressure or expectation.

You don’t need to have the right words - just somewhere to start.

I specialise in working with men and teenage boys who:

  • struggle to open up
  • overthink or feel constantly on edge
  • deal with anger or frustration
  • feel emotionally shut down
  • use alcohol or other coping strategies to manage how they feel

What you can expect

  • A safe, confidential space
  • A non-judgemental and respectful relationship
  • Sessions that move at a pace that feels comfortable for you
  • Support that is compassionate, realistic, and grounded

I offer both in-person sessions in Chester and online counselling, making therapy accessible wherever you’re based.

Taking the first step

Reaching out can feel daunting - especially if you’re not used to asking for help.

If you’ve been thinking about counselling for a while but haven’t taken the step, you’re welcome to get in touch.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation - no pressure, just a chance to see if it feels right.

  • I hold a Masters degree in Child and Family Psychology from the University of Chester.
  • I hold a Masters degree in Clinical Counselling from the University of Chester.
  • I also have a level 5 children and young persons counselling qualification

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
