About me

I’m a bit different. I look and sound a bit different, this profile may look a bit different. That may not suit you…but on the other hand it might be exactly what you’re looking for. With me, what you see is what you get, and I know I’m not the right counsellor for everyone. What you will get from me, is authenticity, passion and a very high ethical bar with your safety at the very heart of what I do. I believe passionately in anti-discriminatory practice and work hard to ensure the counselling space is an equal and safe space. With more than 10,000 counselling hours under my belt, you’ll be in a very experienced pair of hands.

Acceptance is something I struggled with growing up as a lesbian in a rather old-fashioned part of rural Scotland.  As my self awareness has grown, I am increasingly identifying as non-binary so I am aware of the crucial role of acceptance in our wellbeing. I have lived experience of intolerance, discrimination and abuse and this informs who I am as a counsellor, although I am much more than this.  If this is part of your story, I am very open to working with any aspects of identity you may be wanting to explore.

I am also autistic having only been diagnosed in the last couple of years. This has been a real journey and I have a growing number of clients who are autistic or ADHD. The impact of being neurodivergent is something I understand through lived experience and am very comfortable working with clients to explore this.

In addition, I have a keen interest and a massive body of experience in working with trauma, specifically adult survivors of (mostly) childhood sexual abuse and sexual and domestic violence. Through working in this area, I  have developed an understanding of, and have sought out additional training in, working with dissociation, panic, anxiety, attachment and relationships (amongst other things), which are all things that may come from a range of experiences that may or may not include abuse. These may be things you’re struggling with.

I work with you, at your pace, to look at what you want to look at. I am led by you and the power and control are yours. I believe you are the expert in your own experience, this is YOUR life and we’ll look at whatever you choose to bring. This may involve a variety of approaches but we’ll navigate these together. At the moment, I’m working through online video or telephone, the pandemic has taught us the value that a safe telephone or online space can provide and can be more accessible than in person. I am looking to provide in person sessions in future, if that is something you feel you might benefit from.

I am also a qualified and experienced clinical supervisor for therapists from a range of modalities and all ranges of experience.

An initial consultation to see if counselling with me is right for you is free and full sessions are £55 for 50 minutes. For clinical supervision, it would be £75 per 1.5 hours, feel free to call or email me to discuss your needs.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
