About me

Hello

I am an experienced and understanding psychodynamic counsellor with over twelve years' experience and I am a registered member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). Additionally I have practised as a pharmacist for many years. I provide open-ended psychodynamic counselling exclusively on Zoom and telephone. No need for you to travel!

I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where your thoughts and feelings can be brought, shared and explored. I often work with clients who are seeking help and support with: anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties and addictions.

We are all capable of holding on to negative thoughts and feelings such as doubt, fear, anger and resentment (especially when we have never received the emotional support that we need). Harbouring these thoughts and feelings affects how we relate to other people and diminishes our total life experience. Contextualising and understanding negative feelings and beliefs loosens their hold over us!

Your past does not define you!

By exploring the psychodynamics of our inner worlds and identifying our blind-spots we gain access an expanded range of relational options and ultimately to a new and fuller way of being in the world.

Reaching out is the first step towards recovery!

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

Our blind spots can cause us to repetitively interpret situations in a biased way. They significantly affect how we relate to other people. Effectively they restrict our range of options in relationships and in this way often lead to a sense of being stuck.

Below is an analogy that illustrates how emotions such as anxiety, anger, despair and depression can come about when old templates or old points of reference are being used as a guide.

Imagine navigating around present day Britain using a 1950's or even a 1970's road map for reference. You are referring to an out of date map for guidance so consequently the reality of the present day road network will seem alarming and confusing to you. Some routes indicated on your map will no longer exist. Unexpected routes will present! This disorientating and alarming experience could undoubtedly activate a wide range of distressing emotions. The following are some of the emotions that I think could be experienced: confusion, panic, fear, insecurity, anger and frustration.

It is important to know when to set aside our old out of date references in order to become free to engage authentically and constructively in the present.

Counselling changes lives!
