Anxiety, Panic attacks Loss and Bereavement are all issues that I can help to alleviate and support. I am experienced in working with various Sexual issues and these include supporting victims of Rape and Abuse and Domestic Violence. I have also worked extensively with Transexual and Gender Issues and feel that I am empathetic to people of various sexual orientations.

I can help you towards a more positive and meaningful lifestyle with clarity and choice in the future. This can be achieved by surmounting the blocks which are holding you back. You will find my approach both challenging and encouraging, compassionate and fruitful. Once our therapeutic relationship has been firmly established, I may also be able to work by telephone, Skype or Email.
I offer a safe, confidential arena in which you can explore your issues and increase your self awareness and strengthen your relationships and contact with your environment.
Gestalt is a "Talk" therapy and over the years I have seen this approach help many people in understanding themselves and their reactions better and leading more satisfying lives.
I work with adults and young people and couples and also in solution focused EAP work for a local authority and two other employee support organisations. I also carry out rehabilitation work for a national addiction support programme. I work in congenial surroundings in Belper. This is very central for Chesterfield, The Peaks and Dales of Derbyshire, Sheffield, Derby, Belper and Nottingham. I can offer home visits, have disabled access and parking available from my place of work.
What does Gestalt Therapy Mean?
Gestalt is a German word and means “Organised Whole”
Wouldn’t we all like to feel whole and happy in how we respond and connect to both our environment and everyone with whom we make contact?
Sometimes blocks, or fixed ways of being, get in the way, which hamper our progress and leave us unsatisfied. People need to be understood not in isolation but as part of the environment in which they live and there is an important connection between psychological events and the sorts of settings in which they occur.
The approach focuses on the development of self-awareness, people’s circumstances and how they function in those circumstances.
So, since Gestalt Therapy is a “Talk” Therapy and dialogue with the Therapist, in a safe therapeutic relationship, provides an arena to explore underlying patterns of thought, feelings and behaviour, opportunities arise to cultivate this self awareness, allowing for greater insight, clarity and understanding, in relating to ourselves and others.
In the supportive and creative space which we can generate together, you can experience new and authentic ways of being.
This will help you to get a fuller sense of the ways you feel, think and act in different situations and at different times, by way of awareness of moment to moment activity in the therapeutic setting. This will increase your choices about how you live your life and interact with others.
Now is the time to start the beginning of the rest of your life!
‘I started seeing Patti after a reasonably big operation, when I was also finding life complicated because one of my two manic depressive sons was experiencing a hyper manic episode – the latest manifestation of 18 years of supporting my sons in their sometimes very difficult battles with mental health problems. As the conversation with Patti developed, we unpacked a number of other areas which were contributing to my stress, including the recent ending of a 4 year relationship, the temporary loss of other family support, and the need to embed myself more in my new home town, while managing the negative reactions of some of my friends to my move..
I feel the work we have done in the last 10 months has really helped me get a better handle on how to really settle into my new home, and adjust to myself, my friends and my relatives as we all age. I have also begun to understand how to allow myself to feel my emotions and my own needs, rather than just ploughing on distracting myself with activity and care for others. I feel that maybe I am beginning to get my life into a better balance between my needs and everyone else’s! I have been on pretty high revs in that game since I was 13, (I’m now 60!), when I first started juggling my own Mum’s ill health and my school work, and maybe that is at least part of the reason it has felt a real challenge. The support from Patti has been very important in making these transitions.’

I first contacted Patti over a year ago when certain personal issues felt like they were going to take over and destroy my life. Even though she was abroad on holiday Patti still responded to my contact, calmed me down, reassured me and told me that I was doing the right thing in seeking help. We made an initial face to face appointment for when she returned from holiday.
I had no real idea what Gestalt therapy was and that first session was daunting to say the least. However, Patti made me feel welcome and at ease straight away and the atmosphere at our initial and all future sessions, while often challenging has always been open, informal and friendly.
The sessions with Patti undoubtedly helped me tackle and deal with the immediate issues that were affecting me. However, Patti’s methods also made me think about and understand the wider things from my present and past that have made me the person I am, all in a very safe environment. I believe I am a much more rounded and confident person as a consequence.
There can be no better testimonial to Patti than that despite being in a much better place now, I continue to see her on a regular if less frequent basis. I still welcome the opportunity to just talk things through with her.

My first contact with Patti was through a phone call. I had looked on the internet for a Counsellor in Derbyshire and I knew that when I saw her photograph and information, she stood out from all the rest. It took a lot of courage for me to make that initial call. I felt nervous about arranging an appointment but as soon as I spoke to Patti I felt at ease and comfortable.
I had always been, I thought, a strong person who looked on the bright side of things and who would do anything for anyone, without expecting things in return. I listened to everyone else’s problems but nobody listened to mine.
So when I had my son and a few years later my daughter, I put all my effort into making them happy and protecting them. I forgot about the most important person, myself.
I had gone from a woman who had confidence, drive, creativity and ambitions to a person whom I didn’t know, who had no energy or lust for life, as I was giving it all to my children.
This had been going on for years but as soon as I had contacted Patti, this was the first step on the ladder to finding myself.
Patti has helped me feel so at ease, the atmosphere at our sessions has been so comfortable and relaxed and there was always a coffee waiting for me.
We talked through my issues and she always knew if i was upset, tense or happy, even though I didn’t think that that I was showing any emotions.
Patti also identified underlying things like my need to do certain repetitive tasks to make me feel in control.
I did cry a lot, but I needed too, I had to let things go, that I had been keeping inside for years. She hit the nail on the head and always understood me.
I now feel better than I have ever felt. I have regained my confidence, creativity but most of all, I have found the real me and it has made me a better mum as well!
I am doing things that I would never have done before and I now have people around me who love me and support me. I also know that it’s important for me to make time for myself.
Thanks Patti, I will always be grateful for the day that I looked on the internet and found you. I didn’t think that I could ever feel so alive! Thank you.
I initially approached Patti after researching counsellors on the BACP website. Her use of Gestalt therapy is something that appealed and her location appropriate for my needs.
We had a telephone conversation followed by an initial meet. I felt that Patti’s counselling room was a safe and comfortable environment within which to open up and during that first meet we outlined expectations and agreed to work together….it was as simple as that.
Working with Patti has been an eye opening experience. I initially approached her with very specific issues in mind, however Patti’s methods meant that I was able to open up and explore experiences and feelings that I had previously blocked out.
Working with Patti has helped relieve me of certain emotional burdens that were holding me back. I can honestly say that I feel like a weight has been lifted. Patti’s style with me was not only someone with a listening ear but also someone who will challenge thought processes, which for me was just right.

“Thank you very much for everything you have done for me. You were a fantastic help and really got me in the right place.”

“Having experienced anxiety and panic attacks for a period of time, I finally came to the decision to seek help. Initially I sought medical assistance but soon realised that I wasn’t ill or in need of a prescription, but I was in need of counselling. Having researched on the Internet, I discovered Patti and following a short telephone conversation I felt at ease and made my first appointment.
It wasn’t until I had attended a couple of appointments that I opened up and realised I had been having anxiety and panic attacks for many years (decades) without fully realising. This only came to the forefront during the counselling sessions, when Patti highlighted it along with my subconscious O.C.D. habitual tendencies and constant organising.
Once this was highlighted, it answered numerous questions that were going round in my mind and lifted a huge weight off my shoulders, that had rested there for many years. I actually started to smile again.
Having visited Patti over a 4 month period I’ve amazed myself with the turn around in my outlook on life. I’m content and happier with the new hope I have for the future, which has been achieved with the help and support of Patti.”
“I first approached Patti for help just over a year ago after she had been recommended by a friend who was also a Gestalt Therapist. Initially my reasons for making contact were stress, lack of sleep and my irritable and irrational behaviour in general – or at least that was the list I provided during our initial discussions. I think I knew even then that my real problem was with alcohol, but thankfully when the truth became apparent Patti agreed to work with me in any case and things moved on from there.
Since then I have admitted and accepted that I am an alcoholic due to the general insanity in my life in the early stages, and my various ‘high points’ including a rehabilitation centre, police cell and hospital bed among others. Patti has helped me in so many ways over the past year, not only to be able to stay sober, but also just as importantly to address my life issues to allow me to conduct my life in a normal manner – or as close as I can get! Our weekly sessions always have an invigorating effect on me, and the relaxed yet professional atmosphere often has me leaving in a very positive manner after we have addressed my issues that become apparent that day. We never have an agenda and it always seems strange to me how we end up talking about things that are important to me that just become apparent then, I guess that is how it all works.
My confidence, self-awareness, lack of fear and wellbeing is unrecognisable from 12 months ago, and I am eternally grateful for that and the ability to live a more fulfilled, happy and meaningful life. Without Patti and her ongoing support, I am not sure that would have been possible.”
