Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

I am an experienced counsellor with over 20 years of practice, supporting individuals to build healthier relationships with others and develop a stronger, more positive relationship with themselves. My work is grounded in the belief that meaningful change is possible when people feel heard, understood, and supported.

Relationships: I began my career with Relate, where I spent 10 years working with both couples and individuals navigating a wide range of relationship challenges. This foundation gave me a deep understanding of communication patterns, emotional connection, and the complexities that can arise within intimate and family relationships. I support clients at different stages, whether they are strengthening a relationship, facing separation, or re-evaluating what they need moving forward.

Teenagers: I later specialised in working with young people and their families, becoming one of the early pioneers of in-school counselling services. I have provided counselling for teenagers in busy secondary schools for over 15 years and continue to manage a counselling service in an inner-city school. This keeps me closely connected to the evolving needs of young people today. I have a particular interest in school-related anxiety, exam stress, and the challenges that can arise during adolescence.

Parenting and Family Work: My experience with teenagers has naturally developed into a focus on family dynamics and parenting support. I work with both young people and their parents to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and navigate the transition into adulthood. I recognise that this stage of life can be challenging for parents as well as teenagers, both professionally and through personal experience.

Neurodiversity (ADHD and Autism): I have a strong interest in supporting neurodiverse young people and adults, including those with ADHD and autism. Alongside my professional experience, I bring personal understanding to this work, which helps me offer a compassionate, practical and non-judgemental approach. I support clients and families to better understand their needs, reduce anxiety, and build strategies that work for them.

I also work with individuals experiencing anxiety, life transitions, and those who feel at a crossroads. My aim is to help you feel more confident, more at ease within yourself, and better equipped to manage your relationships and life moving forward.

I offer ZOOM sessions, and there is further information on my website www.obrcounselling.co.uk.
