About me

Based in Menston between Guiseley, Otley and Ilkley (LS29) but also accessible across Leeds and West Yorkshire, I offer weekly counselling and psychotherapy. As your therapist my aim is to provide you with a safe and confidential space in which to explore the difficulties and challenges you are currently experiencing in your life

Finding the right person to talk to can be so important at difficult times.  Whether your problems are recent or long term, I will work with you to help you make sense of them in the context of your life right now. I will support you to explore and work through your issues in a way that will support the changes you want to make as well as your personal growth and development.

I have particular experience of supporting people with stress, anxiety and depression having worked for the NHS IAPT service in Leeds and will help you to gain a better understanding of why you feel the way you do. Over time this may change the extent to which your issues affect you.

Where relevant I also use mindfulness to promote a greater connection between the mind and the body.  Mindfulness helps to develop a greater capacity to 'be with' life's inevitable challenges and I aim to promote an openness and curiosity to your experiences which may also help you to understand yourself better. For further information you can read the article below - What is mindful counselling?  I have also undertaken additional training to enable me to support clients who have experienced both early relational trauma and trauma later in life.  Traumatic experiences can leave us struggling to develop and maintain relationships and manage our emotions.  I work in a trauma informed way to support you to process traumatic experiences and events and learn how to manage difficult feelings and impulses.

I am registered with the BACP and abide by their code of ethics.  in addition to registration, my work has also been accredited by the BACP (the 'gold standard' for therapists) which means that I have undergone an advanced level of training in terms of theory and skills development and submitted a body of work which has been independently assessed and found to be of the standard required to be awarded accreditation. More recently I have been awarded my senior accreditation further demonstrating my post qualification development as a therapist.

I work for a range of Employee Assistance Providers including BUPA.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a BACP registered and senior accredited counsellor and psychotherapist.  I have a post-graduate diploma in Psychodynamic counselling from the University of Leicester.

I have experience of working with:

  • young people and adults gained from working for the Leeds NHS IAPT
  • adults in the voluntary sector
  • an NHS staff counselling service
  • students in an HE setting and
  • adults in my private practice

In addition to this I have 29 years of experience working for a major public sector organisation in Leeds including many years as a senior manager. From this I have gained an in depth understanding of how work can give rise to stress and anxiety as well how we can develop more effective ways of coping with these issues, particularly by gaining a better understanding of our responses to these pressures.

I have also undertaken an 8 week mindfulness based stress reduction course as well as a two part course with the University of Bangor Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice on using Mindfulness in Therapy.

As a therapist I have experience of working with:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • workplace stress
  • bereavement and loss
  • difficulty in relationships
  • addiction
  • eating disorders
  • emotional, physical and sexual abuse
  • self harming
  • gender and sexuality issues
  • neuro-diversity

This is not an exhaustive list (see below).  Please call or email me about your specific needs.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
