About me

"We cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are."

The above quote is written by Carl Rogers, the founder of Person Centred Counselling, the approach I am qualified in and practice. Counselling, to me, was the first stage of my own self acceptance. Learning to understand my past, listening to my inner child, beginning the ongoing process of finding my self-worth and letting go of years of guilt and shame.

Asking for help is probably one of the most challenging things we can do for ourselves, yet equally one of the bravest and empowering choices you can make. It was making that choice for myself that led you to find me on here. After my own personal journey led me to find a therapist my life began to change and eventually took me to pursuing a career as a counsellor.

I can only imagine how overwhelming it must be scrolling through endless lists of available counsellors and trying to find one that is the best person for you. That said I would invite you to give me a try and look forward to hearing from you.

I can offer you a safe space where you will feel heard, held and accepted. A space where you will be able to process and express challenging thoughts and emotions, a space where you will feel able to bring whatever you choose to our sessions.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Person Centred Counsellor. I qualified in 2011. My experience is extremely diverse and I have been fortunate to work with a wide range of client groups. I began my career working in a Primary School setting where I did 2 academic years as a volunteer counsellor with The Place 2be. I have since worked with adolescents, young people and adults. I have completed many CPD courses and continue to do so. Although I am a Person Centred trained counsellor I have attended and continue to attend various training and workshops that include using other techniques and methods and I will always work therapeutically in whatever way works best for my client and will always follow my clients lead on how they want to work as I believe every individual is unique and one size does not fit all. Building Trust and enabling a person to feel safe, empowered, valued, seen and heard are the foundations for any good therapeutic alliance and relationship. I myself have had several different therapists and counsellors over the years, each bringing different qualities and things to our relationship. Ongoing training, my own supervision and own personal therapy are all things I engage with regularly as I said on my opening I am still on my own journey and believe I always will be.

I am currently only working Friday, Saturday and Sunday in my private practice, this is because I work 4 days a week at a secondary school counselling years 7 to 13.  My extensive experience and skills with Young people then sets me in good stead to also work with parents, carers and families of young people. I also have extensive experience working with neurodivergent clients.

Please note unfortunately my approach and way of working is not Pre Trial Therapy appropriate.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

How Counselling can help you and Comments from Clients:

Again not wanting to keep referring back to my own experiences but in a sense as I have mentioned it was starting and finding so much healing, growth and comfort in my personal therapy that led me to see and realise the value in counselling and therapy.

It is by no means an easy journey to begin and not without its challenges as spending 50 minutes talking and opening up, sometimes, very painful feelings, memories and events can be mentally exhausting. However with my sessions I will always follow and respect your lead and you will always have the choice and control of what direction the sessions go in. I will regularly check in and if I sense that something is troubling you, the pace is too fast or you simply need time to process or pause then I will always encourage and notice that. Avoidance and internalising difficult and painful feelings is a totally normal coping mechanism but in therapy/counselling my hope for you is that in time or when you are ready we can begin to unpack some of these feelings. This is another reason I am not always a fan of limiting the number of sessions. I will usually begin with offering 6 sessions with the view of reviewing at the end of the 6 and then should you wish to continue we will do so until the time comes that you feel ready to stop. I am also mindful that for some people they only need and want a few sessions and also some may like to take a break, all things we can discuss in the initial phone call.

These are a few comments that a few of my clients have given me their consent to add here -

''Thank you so much for all of your support over the time I saw you, it made such a difference knowing that there was someone that properly understood me and cared'' Poppy, Pinner

''I have been seeing Naomi for a while now, and always come away from the sessions feeling like a load has been lifted and that I am not crazy. She genuinely understands how I am feeling and helps me to realise that things that have happened to me are not my fault and how to cope with that. Honestly I can't recommend her enough'' Caroline, Bushey

''I was incredibly fortunate to have the support of Naomi over secondary school specifically during A-levels. She helped me navigate how to cope with my anxieties and what could be done to keep me calm during exams. I always felt supported and strongly believe I wouldn’t be the person I am now without her continuous support.''
