About me
Hi, I am glad that you are reaching out for support. This may feel quite scary reaching out for the first time or you may have had therapy before and looking into further counselling, which still may feel scary...I want this process to be as easy and gentle as possible.
I am a Counsellor and Psychotherapist with many years of experience. My core training is within a Humanistic and Integrative approach. I believe that not one single approach can hold the answer, we have our histories and experiences and as a therapist, although I do not have the answers, within our sessions I will offer a safe space for you to find your way. Within our relationship, I will be integrating the whole of the person/body/spirit to enable space for growth, understanding and healing.
Finding a therapist whom you feel comfortable with, and finding the correct 'fit' is important for the work ahead. I offer a free 15-minute 'hello' video call - to see if I am the correct therapist for you. This could be the start of an immensely liberating journey!
Training, qualifications & experience
I have over 30 years of working front line within statutory organisations, such as a Recovery worker/substance misuse (NHS and the Criminal Justice System), a Multi-Systemic Family Therapist (City Council) and a Mental Health Advisor within a University. I gained my BSc in Counselling & Psychotherapy (2015) at The Sherwood Psychotherapy Institute. I sometimes needed a more profound understanding to work with those with distress, to offer hope, empowerment and hopefully long-term change.
I have worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including psychiatrists, psychologists and educators. I have experience working with those with enduring mental health and substance misuse problems (dual diagnosis), complex trauma issues and families in need. I have worked as a mental health advisor within a university setting and am still working within a university as a crisis worker, which fits well with my private work. With this breadth of knowledge and understanding of life's complexities, I can use the most appropriate approach to reflect the diversity I work with.
As part of my registration, I complete regular ongoing training, such as Integrating Polyvagal Theory in Clinical practice, working with Dissociative Disorders, Online and telephone Counselling, Child Sexual Abuse, Dealing with Distress-working with suicide and self-harm is some of the training I have completed this year.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
