Julie Smart BSc (Hons), Dip. Psychodynamic Counselling, MBACP (Accred).
I understand that approaching a counsellor for the first time can be daunting. From the outset I offer a confidential, non-judgemental, safe and secure environment in which you can express your feelings and gain deeper insight into any difficulties you might be experiencing.
I am a qualified counsellor, accredited and registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I have 10 years experience working with adults with a wide range of presenting concerns including bereavement and loss, trauma, depression, stress and anxiety, obsessive behaviours, relationship difficulties, transition and major life changes, low self-esteem and self-worth.
How I work
Following an initial phone call we may arrange to meet for an assessment session which will determine whether the counselling I offer is appropriate to your needs and also for you to decide if you would like to work with me.
After assessment, and depending on your needs, I can offer short-term counselling which can be anywhere between 8-20 sessions with a focus on a particular concern, or open-ended counselling to explore deep-rooted feelings and past experiences that can affect daily life.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a trained psychodynamic counsellor. As an accredited member of the BACP, I work to their ethical framework for good practice which requires attendance at regular professional supervision and continued professional development (CPD). I have in-depth understanding of the therapeutic process gained from 10 years of providing open-ended psychodynamic counselling and short-term focused counselling to individuals presenting a broad range of concerns.
I have a practice room in Watford where I offer evening sessions. I also work in a London hospice. I work with clients from a diverse range of social and cultural backgrounds. I also practice as a wellbeing supervisor to staff within the educational sector, supporting their professional and personal emotional wellbeing.
I have previously worked for charities, counselling organisations and within the educational sector.
My qualifications include:
BSc (Hons) Reflective Therapeutic Practice (Metanoia Institute/Middlesex University)
Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling (WPF/Herts and Beds Counselling Foundation)
Certificate in Attachment Narrative therapy theory and skills (Bowlby Centre)
Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
