Hello and welcome to my profile.
I know how daunting looking for a counsellor can be, trying to find the right person for you, so let me tell you a bit about myself and my work.
I am a qualified, accredited counsellor with experience of working with a wide variety of people and many different issues. These include anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, relationship issues, low self-esteem and issues stemming from experiences of childhood abuse.
Among my personal values I am seriously committed to the work I do with my clients and hold a deep integrity towards myself and them. I feel passionate about the potential for counselling to help a person who is struggling with life’s difficulties. It is time just for you, to be yourself without judgement or criticism or the expectations of others. A safe space in which you will be heard. It is an opportunity to find meaning in your life, to know what your truth is and to find your own answers so you can feel more confident in making choices.
It is really important to me that you feel able to talk about whatever is worrying you and I hope we will build a trusting relationship in which you feel truly accepted for who you are. When I meet a new client my focus is on getting to know how life is for them, understanding their world. I respect each person as a unique individual, with their own life journey and set of experiences.
Being in counselling can be challenging, but rewarding. Talking to someone about what is happening in your life can feel unfamiliar, even scary, and I will be careful to work at your pace. Sometimes it can be hard to understand why you feel the way you do and our work together can offer insights which can lead to change. It may be that talking about what is happening in your life now leads to unresolved issues from the past. Exploring these past events, such as abuse, trauma, loss and bereavement, can result in resolving and healing them, so they no longer impact on you in the present.
If you think that counselling with me might be helpful to you, we could arrange an initial meeting. This first, free session, which lasts for about 60 minutes is an opportunity for you to identify the issues and concerns you have and your hopes for how counselling may help you. Having met me and experienced a bit the way I work you may decide to continue seeing me for ongoing counselling, how ever you are under no obligation, it is your choice.
Do contact me if you would like to find out more, I know it can feel like a big step to take, so I am really happy to respond to any questions by phone or email.
I offer short and open ended/long term counselling depending on the difficulties you are experiencing and what you want to achieve through counselling.
Day and evening sessions are available.
If you have difficulty with paying the fees, please feel able to discuss this with me rather than ruling yourself out.
My counselling room is easy to find in central Stroud, close to the train and buses. There is ample parking in the town close by.
My practice follows the ethical codes of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am fully insured, undertake regular supervision, and ensure I maintain professional standards with regular CPD.
Training, qualifications & experience
I trained as a person-centred counsellor and the way I work is based on this approach, informed by ideas from other models of therapy, in particular the philosophy of existential therapy. What this means is that I respect you, the client, as the expert of your life and will support you to discover your own resources to make the changes which are important to you.
Experience has taught me that often underlying our current difficulties are the existential issues of feeling quite alone, struggling to find meaning in our lives, feeling anxious about life's limitations or finding it difficult to take the responsibility for making changes.
