About me

I am offering Telephone and/or Video (Zoom) sessions.  These can be 30 or 60 minutes long.  Some clients already choose this method of therapy, and it works very well.  Days and times are flexible, so please feel welcome to contact me by email or phone to discuss your needs.

My name is Jo Ashburner and I am a fully qualified CBT Psychotherapist and Counsellor, accredited with the BACP, usually working in Swansea but now covering the whole of the UK.  I work with men, women, teenagers and children aged 7 and above and provide therapy that is tailored to your individual needs and circumstances.

I'm a married mother of 3, have 2 dogs and 3 cats, and enjoy photography. I am also a professional, friendly, empathic and open-minded therapist who understands that life is sometimes tough. Seeking help from someone like me takes bravery and trust, and that alone gains my respect. I won't judge you or what you tell me, but will work together with you to help you and fully appreciate the need for a confidential and private service.

Evidence-based protocols, research and experience guide my interventions in helping you to gain clarity and understand what is triggering, and maintaining your difficulties, and what we can do so that positive change can be achieved. This will focus on your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, physical feelings, life experiences, and beliefs about yourself and others that may have been gained in early childhood or anytime since.

People often ask me about strategies, and these may be acquired through gaining a different perspective on something, learning to challenge an unhelpful thought, completing a worksheet, mindfulness, breathing exercises or behaving in a deliberate but different way to usual. Some people like to work with pens and paper, others prefer creative materials, or simply to talk, and all of this can be accommodated to suit you personally.

Trying to choose a therapist from these pages can be quite daunting so If you’d like to phone to discuss whether I may be able to help you or your child, or to ask me any other questions, please feel welcome to do so, or if you text me your name and number, I will willingly call you back.

If you want to make an appointment to see me, all you need to do is contact me to let me know by phone, text or email, and then we can work out a mutually convenient day and time.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
