About me

Hello,

I’m Jane - thank you for taking the time to look at my profile.  I’m a Person-Centred Counsellor with my own private practice based in Shoreham by Sea.

If you’re looking at my profile then you are probably considering talking to someone about how you’re feeling.  Beginning counselling, and choosing a counsellor to work with can be a daunting task – especially if you’ve never had counselling before.  This is why I offer a free 20-minute telephone consultation – just an informal chat so that you can ask any questions that you may have, and so that you can get a sense of who I am as a counsellor, and if you feel I would be a good fit for you.

We look for counsellors for all sorts of reasons:  maybe you are feeling low or depressed, or are experiencing stress or anxiety.  There may be a specific life event that you would like to talk about and work though, a relationship issue, a work issue, or maybe you just have a sense that it would be helpful to talk to someone about how you are feeling.  Whatever the reason, if you feel you would benefit from talking to someone, then please do get in touch.

Counselling is an extremely beneficial and therapeutic process.  Due to our complex and busy lives we don’t get the time we deserve to concentrate on ourselves, and counselling is a way of bringing some balance and insight into our lives.  To take the time to really understand how we feel, understand our experiences and think about what we want in our future.

Counselling is a talking therapy.  A space where we feel safe to explore our thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental environment.  I pride myself on creating a relaxed, therapeutic space for my clients.  No formalities - just a welcoming and confidential space.

I offer a non-directive approach which means that I will never assume that I know you better than you know yourself.  We are the experts in our own lives but sometimes we need a helping hand and an extra pair of ears to help make sense of it all.  As human beings we often say one thing and do another, we contradict ourselves, we surprise ourselves in good ways and bad ways.  Counselling is about taking the time to really get to know yourself and understand how you feel.

If you choose to start counselling with me, I will work with you to help you decide what is the best process for you.  Whether we meet weekly, or fortnightly, short-term or long-term.  It’s up to you – everyone is different – there is no one size fits all when it comes to counselling.

So just a little bit of information about me.  I am a qualified counsellor with an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and I’m a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy).

I have been working in private practice for over 11 years in the UK and overseas, and am experienced with working with a diverse range of clients, on a diverse range of issues including:  depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues, bereavement, abuse (sexual, physical & emotional), anger, low self-confidence and low self-esteem.  My office is based very centrally is Shoreham by Sea and I am working with clients face-to-face, or via WhatsApp video if you would prefer to talk online.

Thank you again for taking the time to read my profile.  If you would like to book an appointment, arrange a free consultation, or ask any questions that you may have, then please do get in touch – I’d love to hear from you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I studied at the University of Essex Southend where I obtained the Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, Certificate in Counselling Studies and Certificate in Counselling Skills.

In the UK I worked for the relationship charity Relate as a Youth Counsellor and also at a doctor’s surgery where I counselled adults.  In 2010 I relocated to Amsterdam and opened my own private practice, where I provided a counselling service for Expats in English. In January 2018 I moved back to the UK with my family and reopened my practice in Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex.

In conjunction with counselling, I have also been a Programme Manager at Child Helpline International, a Mentor for young people, a Careers Adviser for adults and contributed a monthly advice column to the UK edition of Psychologies magazine.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
