About me

I am a qualified counsellor. My work as a therapist is underpinned by the core conditions of the Person-centred approach: empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR), and Congruence. However, my approach to counselling is Integrative, and I integrate Gestalt and psychodynamic approaches, including the use of transference, countertransference, and the empty chair technique from Gestalt. I see each client as an individual with their own needs and presenting problems, which means I approach and adapt to the person in front of me and use the different approaches to counselling that I have integrated throughout the three years I have worked as a student counsellor. Even if there are similarities in circumstances and presenting issues, I have discovered that what might work for one person might not work for another; clients come with different attachment styles and grow up within different environments that shape and play a part in their life scripts. For example, I have worked with a client with such extreme anxiety that they sat in silence through the duration of a session; I discovered that playing folk music helped reduce their anxiety sufficiently that they could be present throughout a session. I believe counselling should be accessible to all who seek help through talking therapy services. Having faced and overcome my own challenges in life, I understand the benefits that therapy can bring.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy accredited by Staffordshire University. I have experience working with adults and young people, both short-term and long-term clients. I completed the five-day counselling young people training course with the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute. I also took part in a four-hour suicide awareness course hosted by Let's Talk Training. I have also completed an Experiential Workshop at the Manchester Institute of Psychotherapy.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
