About me

 Hi. I'm James.

I'm a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist, and I can help empower you to work through issues or challenges that may be making life difficult for you. I offer a "safe space" for you to explore issues in a non-judgemental way.  This might include past trauma or current experiences.

How do we do this? We talk. Well, mostly you talk and I listen.

As we talk I'll ask questions and offer observations, which will help you start to understand what's underneath your difficulties. It's both that simple and that complicated.

I offer one-to-one counselling to adults (aged 18 and over). This is typically on a weekly basis, and lasts for as many weeks or months as you need.

The best place to start is with a free 30-minute introductory session so you can meet me and we can check we are happy to work together. After this, a typical session lasts 50 minutes, and can be delivered online. I am in the process of finding premises to deliver face to face counselling in the Beeston/Long Eaton area, so if you would prefer this please let me know.

I work in the daytime on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I can also offer evening sessions on Mondays and Fridays.

I am a humanistic counsellor. This is a holistic approach that focuses on personal growth and believes in the inherent worth and potential of every person. I believe each individual is unique and has the capacity for growth and self-actualization. My goal is to help clients tap into their own inner resources and find the tools they need to overcome challenges and live a fulfilling life.

I have been seeing clients since January 2023, and some of the issues I have supported people with include:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • relationship issues
  • identity concerns
  • family issues
  • bereavement
  • feeling "stuck"
  • low self-esteem
  • self-harming
  • drug and alcohol abuse
  • historical domestic abuse
  • historical trauma

I'm based in Long Eaton, on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. I work online with adults across the UK, and am in the process of finding premises to deliver face to face counselling in the Long Eaton/Beeston area.

Please contact me to book an introductory chat, or to enquire about my availability.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy accredited by Staffordshire University. I have experience working with adults and young people, both short-term and long-term clients. I completed the five-day counselling young people training course with the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute. I also took part in a four-hour suicide awareness course hosted by Let's Talk Training. I have also completed an Experiential Workshop at the Manchester Institute of Psychotherapy.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
