About me

Why counselling?

We all experience some form of distress in our lives. It could be sadness, anger, loneliness, stress, grief, anxiety, depression or something that you can’t explain. It could be current or could have happened in the past, or you may not know when it happened. It could lead to feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope, it could be affecting the relationships around you both personally or professionally.

There are many things that contribute to this distress and being aware of them can help to ease the connected emotions. Counselling can help you do this by providing space to explore and reflect upon these feelings. It is a place where you can begin to take control of these feelings and learn to understand them.

How does it work?

I am trained as an integrative counsellor which is several therapies combined, providing sessions tailored to individual needs and personal circumstances. This allows me to get to know each client as the individual they are and provide the type of sessions that will best suite.

The counselling sessions themselves are a pre arranged date and time and last for an hour. They provide a space to bring whatever you want to talk through. They are not designed to offer advice or guidance, instead they are led by you and what you want to bring. There may be an issue that reoccurs or something specific which is looked at, but this is completely at your direction.

What to expect in your first session

The first session will be an opportunity to get to know each other and for me to answer any questions you may have. It also gives you the opportunity to tell me why you have come for counselling. You can tell me as much or as little as you like at this point, these are your sessions and it's completely up to you at what pace we go. If you would like to put a plan in place for future sessions, or would prefer to take each as it comes, that's completely up to you. I will tell you about me, how we can work together and can discuss how we would like to move forward with the sessions. We will also go over the contract that will be put into place.

Online/telephone counselling

It is not always possible to take time out of our lives to travel to a location for a session on a regular basis, so I also offer telephone and online sessions. These will work after having an initial conversation to arrange a date, time and format (online/telephone). At that pre-arranged time, we will have a session and will discuss how we feel it works for you. The format of the sessions is flexible, so if one week you cannot attend online, we can have a telephone session. The same applies if you usually come in for a face to face session. It is important that the sessions work in the best way for you so please feel free to get in touch to discuss what you need.

Accessibility

Close to two local train stations and bus stops, I also have off-road parking and accessibility for those with mobility issues.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Wheelchair user access info
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
