About me

You might be feeling a little lost or noticing that life feels heavier than it used to. Perhaps anxiety has been lingering, or low mood, or experiences from the past that still make themselves known. Or maybe there’s just a quiet sense that something isn’t quite right. However it shows up for you, you don’t have to face it alone.

When confidence feels fragile, reaching out can feel like too much. Finding the words can be hard. Therapy can be a calm, steady place to pause, a space where there’s no need to explain, perform, or have anything figured out. Just somewhere to begin noticing what’s there, gently and at your own pace.

If you’re unsure about therapy or feel tentative about taking a first step, that’s understandable. There’s no pressure here. You’re welcome to arrive exactly as you are, whenever you’re ready.

Client testimony

"Heather has helped me confront and work through my deepest trauma - I now see light at the end of the tunnel."

"I feel stronger - more of a survivor than a victim."

"Therapy with Heather has been lifechanging."

How I work

My background is in Person-Centred Therapy, offering a trauma-informed approach. The Person-Centred approach is empathetic, non-judgemental and led by you. You are the expert of your own experience.  The trauma-informed approach means we only go to the places you are comfortable with. Your past experiences don’t need to be revisited or relived, but together we can make sense of how to cope with their impact in the now.

I work with:

Adults of all ages, from 18+. I am particularly interested in helping older clients for whom counselling may be a new and daunting experience. As a mid-lifer myself, the change in attitudes around mental health resonates strongly when I reflect on my own experiences of growing up.

Anxiety and overwhelm: they can feel like constant worry, tension, or fear, but with support and coping tools, balance and calm can be restored.

Depression: helping you explore feelings sadness, loss of joy and lack of motivation.

Low self-esteem: finding ways to reframe your narrative and self-talk, helping to towards self-acceptance and self-worth.

Trauma: I specialise in working with adults (male and female) who have experienced childhood trauma and sexual abuse, and/or domestic abuse.  I have extensive training in trauma-informed approaches and also currently work with sexual violence survivors through New Pathways.

Grief and bereavement: life can sometimes feel like a series of losses, whether that is the death of a loved one or a life-changing diagnosis. Being there and listening may help you move forward as you adjust to life after loss.

Life transitions: changes like menopause, facing an empty nest after years of nurturing a family, or becoming a carer for elderly parents can all have an impact on our ability to manage and maintain our equilibrium. Having a safe space to voice your worries, thoughts and feelings may help lighten your load.

Relationships: exploring your needs and wants, and how to build the confidence to express these to the people in your life.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Level 5 Diploma and Person-Centred Counselling and Therapy and Counselling, CPACB – CLEAR training in supporting adults harmed by sexual abuse and relationship trauma, Barnardo's - Level 2 Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence and Level 2 certificate in Equality and Diversity.

I am also ASIST trained (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and have Level 3 safeguarding.

I have an accredited certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
