About me

As a qualified Child Psychotherapist, 10 years working with children in a professional music based  capacity and a family of my own,  I understand that life can be stressful. As a psychotherapist I seek to support my clients in a deeper understanding of the struggles they face whether rooted in the past or a current ongoing problem.

My approach is both integrative and person centred, with a grounding in psycho dynamic understanding of how the past affects the present.  Underpinning my practice is my knowledge of Transactional Analysis theory. I also draw on my knowledge of attachment, trauma and child development to inform my practice.

Working with children:

As a Child Psychotherapist, I have experience working in a school setting, private practice and a charity. I am able to be adaptive with children and young people and help them explore the issues bringing them to therapy in a calm, safe and explorative setting. I not only use traditional talk therapy methods but also use creative ways of working with many young people such as sand tray, puppets, clay, art and play therapy as a way to meet them developmentally where they are at, and to help create a safe and supportive space for my clients to be who they are while exploring the challenges they are facing.

I know how important it is for parents and carers to feel supported, I therefore  offer to meet all parents and carers involved and explore the challenges that affect the wider family. I believe this is beneficial for the young person as I recognise how important the role parents and carers play in the development and wellbeing of their children.

First sessions:

The first session is usually with parents/carers, and involves an assessment of the problems that have arisen and a history of the child's life so far, we will discuss aims and objectives of therapy while drawing up a contract of the work to be done during our time together. Children/young people can attend this session where appropriate.

For adults, the first session will be an assessment of problems you are facing, background history and then contracts will be discussed.

Therapy sessions are always 50 minutes in length, I generally work in person, but am also comfortable offering online therapy.

I ask for a review after the initial 6 sessions, to see if as your therapist I am the best fit and whether therapy is still currently the best option for you.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
