About me
Shwmae / Hello, my name is Dorothy and I am a qualified counsellor. I offer therapeutic counselling to anyone who needs a safe space to explore issues and emotions that may be overwhelming or difficult to manage.
How I work
I am a person centred therapist, which means my therapy is non-directive and client led. I like to think of it as though you, the client, are holding a map, with me, the counsellor, standing next to you. You are deciding which path we are taking and I am walking along with you on your journey. I am not an expert in your experiences so cannot tell you what to do. I will work with you so that you find the best way to help yourself.
I have particular experience of working safely with trauma, using the Babette Rothschild method. Through this work I have worked a lot with young adults. I also have experience of working with bereavement with a wide range of ages.
Initial assessment
Before working with any client, I conduct an assessment. This is a chance for us to get to know each other a little bit before deciding to work together. It gives you as the client the opportunity to ask any questions and to tell me a little about why you want counselling and your expectations of it. In response, it gives me the opportunity to see whether I can meet your needs and whether I can work with you safely. If I do not think I am the right counsellor to meet those needs, I will refer you to an organisation or individual who can. The assessment will take no longer than 30 minutes and is free of charge.
Method
I provide counselling online, over the phone, and in person. In person therapy is conducted from a convenient therapy room located in the centre of Carmarthen town. I can offer weekly, fortnightly or monthly appointments, depending on your needs.

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
