About me
Hello, my name is Beth Newton and I am an experienced psychotherapist, offering short-term and long-term counselling and psychotherapy in Nottingham.
How I Can Help
I believe that we have the capacity to live fulfilling lives in relation with ourselves, with others and our surroundings. However, we can get stuck in patterns of behaving, responding and relating that get in the way of us leading the lives we would like to lead. We might have beliefs about ourselves and how we should be living that are keeping us stuck. Often, we just keep going, even if we feel unease, depression or anxiety. However, our lives can be disrupted by a crisis or change, such as work problems or loss of employment, relationship issues or breakdown, bereavement, questioning our sense of purpose, becoming parents, and many other stressors and events that happen throughout life. At these times, we can suddenly find ourselves with growing levels of anxiety, depression, dissatisfaction, unhappiness, self-criticism or unease that we can no longer manage by ourselves. We might find those things that normally support us and help us get back on track just aren’t working any more.
I offer a supportive, safe, non-judgemental and empathic space where we can explore the struggles you are experiencing together. Our aim will be to raise awareness of your feelings, behaviours, beliefs and ways of relating so you can make choices about how you live.
My Approach
I am a gestalt psychotherapist. This means that I am interested in what is happening here-and-now – in the therapy room and between us. Exploring your past and history is important, but I am also interested in how this impacts you and your current life. As a gestalt psychotherapist, I perceive your mind and body to work as a complete unit, and my background in yoga supports and informs my work. My aim is to support you to increase your awareness of your thoughts, feelings and sensations in the here-and-now and, through awareness, to accept who and how you are. It is from this position of acceptance that change can take place.
Training, qualifications & experience
I trained at Metanoia Institute in London and have an MSc in Gestalt Psychotherapy. I also hold a Post-Graduate Certificate in Trauma from Nottingham University and I am a qualified yoga teacher.
As a psychotherapist, I have worked with individuals on a short-term and long-term basis. I have worked as a psychotherapist at a GP surgery, in a university counselling service, at Nottingham Sexual Violence Support Services and in private practice. I have experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks, eating disorders, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, bereavement, general dissatisfaction with ourselves, our relationships and our lives, and trauma, especially trauma related to sexual violence and child sexual abuse
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
