About me

Hello, I’m Tom. I’m a clinical psychologist, and I offer psychological therapy.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. You may be feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed, self-critical, stuck in old patterns, or unsure how to move forward. You may know exactly what you want help with, or you may only have a sense that things have become difficult and you would like some support.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. You do not need to have everything neatly worked out before getting in touch. We can begin by making sense of what has been happening, what feels difficult at the moment, and what you would like to be different.

My aim is to offer a calm, thoughtful and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly. I work in a collaborative and practical way, so therapy is not only about talking things through, but also about understanding what may be keeping difficulties going and finding ways to move forward.

I mainly use cognitive behavioural therapy. This can help us look at the links between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviour, and think together about what might be helpful to change. I also draw on schema therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy when difficulties feel more long-standing, or when people feel caught in repeated patterns with emotions, relationships, self-criticism or coping.

I work with people of all sexual orientations and backgrounds. I also have particular experience supporting LGBTQ+ clients, especially gay, bisexual and queer men. For some people, it can feel important to speak with a therapist who understands how sexuality, shame, relationships, identity, minority stress or feeling different can affect mental health. These are things we can talk about openly and without judgement.

I have particular experience with:

  • Depression and low mood
  • Low self-esteem and confidence
  • Social anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Longstanding emotional and relationship difficulties, sometimes described as personality disorder
  • Excessive worry and generalised anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Body image concerns and body dysmorphic disorder
  • Health anxiety
  • LGBTQ+ mental health, including work with gay, bisexual and queer men

I have worked in mental health settings for over 15 years, including the NHS, universities and clinical research settings. This has included work at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College London, University College London, the University of Surrey and the University of East London.

I currently work as a lecturer in clinical psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London, and I am also a visiting researcher at UCL’s Division of Psychiatry.
