About me

Life has its ups and downs. No doubt about that.

We all face challenges at different times in our lives: for some of us our childhood experiences have left a mark which affects our day-to-day functioning; for others of us it is life events and life changes that can leave us less able to navigate our lives successfully, losing our sense of self, stability and joy in life.

My role as a counsellor is to help the people I work with to discover and grow their resources and strengths. I support people to (re)connect with themselves, discover who they are now, what they want and how they want to be in the world. From this place of renewed sense of self, people begin to make significant changes in their lives and find new options opening up.

I believe we each have the capacity to change, learn and grow. Building on what we already have is an empowering way to expand our sense of self, develop new options and skills to respond more effectively to the situations and people we meet.

Counselling is a space where you can be seen, met, and responded to. You also get to hear yourself more clearly. This is a process very different to usual everyday interactions: it is a space for learning about yourself, it can be uncomfortable at times, it can feel challenging, and it can be a space where you experience connection and new ways of being, feeling and thinking.

I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties including: relationship difficulties - with partners, family members, friends, colleagues; identity difficulties; career dissatisfaction and career change; bullying; bereavement; finding purpose in life; navigating big life changes such as re-locating and moving house; fertility issues; parenting; menopause; living with (or without) grown up children; and women focussed work.

I am particularly interested in working with people who are parents, or planning on becoming parents. The experience of becoming and being a parent is full of challenge - and with that comes plentiful opportunities for growth and learning. Centring yourself as a parent has a significant impact on you, those around you, and the children you are raising. This process can be especially hard if you are someone who is breaking old family patterns of limiting and harmful family dynamics. I am here to be with you in this process.

I work online and in-person both in Kingsbridge and the Totnes area.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a Certified Transactional Analyst in Counselling, having completed 4 years of training and with more than 6 years experience working as a counsellor. This training included a Diploma in TA counselling.

I regularly engage in CPD opportunities, and supervision and reflective practice are regular core parts of my practice.

In addition to my counselling practice, I train and supervise others in transactional analysis both in the UK and internationally. I have presented at international conferences in TA.

I am also qualified as a transactional analyst in the field of Education - and I am a Provisional Training and Supervising Transactional Analyst (PTSTA - E) in Education.

My initial training in transactional analysis was in the educational field, which built on my background both as a youth and community worker and as an academic in the field of youth, community and education.

Further information

My main modality is Transactional Analysis (TA), which is a humanistic psychology. TA is a theory of personality and relationships, and seeks to understand three main questions: 'Who am I?, Who are you? What's it all about?'. It seeks to understand what goes on inside and between individuals.

The underpinning philosophy of TA asserts that :

  •  we are all fundamentally, existentially, "OK": meaning we are all worthy of love, are valuable
  • we all have the capacity to think for ourselves: meaning I can bring some ways of thinking from my training and experience, and you bring your own perspectives on the world and experience and together we can think and create new understandings and meanings
  • we all have the capacity to change and make new decisions: TA is an optimistic psychology, seeing change as possible and a central part of our experience as humans.

The core focus of the counselling field in TA is to support people to develop their own resources in order to better meet the challenges of their everyday lives - and this, along with TA's philosophy, provides a powerful framework for my work with people.
