About us

Sesame Counselling Service was set up in the early 1990's to offer a low cost counselling service to the residents of Newport and surrounding areas. The name 'Sesame' - "open door" - reflects our commitment to offer a service to adults who feel they might benefit from counselling support.

We are open from 6 – 9pm on Tuesday evenings throughout the year, apart from Bank Holidays, and we are located in Park Square, Newport.

To arrange counselling for yourself please contact us on 01633 223055 and leave a message with your name and number.

Sesame is a voluntary counselling service with a charitable status and as such we do not charge a fixed fee for our counselling sessions, all we ask is that you make a donation for each session to help run the service. The donation is discussed at the first session.

Covid-19 Update
Sesame is temporarily moving to telephone counselling. We hope this won’t be for too long. If you require counselling please contact our number in the normal way

Training, qualifications & experience

Sesame has a small team of counsellors who come from a variety of backgrounds and are at different stages of their counselling careers. We seek to encourage the particular style and skill that each counsellor contributes while keeping our focus firmly on our client's needs.

As a member of the BACP, Sesame fully subscribes to its code of ethics and practice. All our counsellors have regular supervision.

Member organisations *

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.

Fees

Sesame is a voluntary organisation. As a registered charity, we rely on donations made by our clients and we ask each of our clients to give what they can afford. This is done in the knowledge, that by making use of our services, you are ensuring that we can help others in the future.   Your counsellor will discuss and agree with you in the first session how much you are able to donate.

Accessibility

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
