About me

Hello, my name is Sandra.

I know it can be incredibly daunting trying to choose a counsellor; there are many to choose from and many different approaches. However, the central thing to hold in your head, heart and gut as you choose and then work with a counsellor is the quality of the relationship you have with them. The research is clear, if you want a good outcome in counselling then the relationship you have with your counsellor is paramount.

I am a qualified and BACP registered person-centred counsellor dedicated to supporting my clients’ healing and growth. I create therapeutic relationships with clients that are non-judgemental, empathic and real. I will honour your dignity with compassion and companionship. I will hold hope that through our work together you increase your self-understanding and thereby appreciate and engage with your own internal resources to effect the change you are looking for.

The following are extracts of some of my client's testimonials that they have generously permitted me to share with you:

Female, 18 - “Sandra has helped me come to grips with how I feel … I have gained a better outlook on myself as well as life … she was considerate of my feelings and gave me time to talk about my struggles without making me feel like it’s a bad thing or second guessing my opinion … it was never difficult to speak my mind as Sandra made me feel very welcome.”

Male, 23 - “Sandra has truly impacted my life for the better … I’m sure she will change many people’s lives for the better … I don’t know what I would have done without her.”

Male, 41 - “Sandra has helped me enormously. She is warm, understanding and patient. She has made revisiting difficult times less so. She is easy to communicate with and has a great sense of humour. She has helped me reconnect with myself and understand myself.”

Female, 51 - “My sessions with Sandra have been invaluable. She made me feel completely at ease discussing anything that was on my mind and I was able to let my guard down and express difficult emotions with huge relief! … Sandra is incredibly open minded, understanding and empathic person who made me feel I could talk about anything. Sessions with Sandra have enabled me to move forward in a very challenging time in my life. … Sandra, I’m eternally grateful for your professionalism, skills and friendship through this whole process.”

Male, 58 - “… thank you for all the patience, understanding and support that you have given me from day one. I can honestly say that my sessions with you were extremely rewarding.  In the majority of our sessions I left felling more positive and optimistic about my future.”

Female, 62 - “Sandra didn’t push or rush me.  She let me talk at my own pace … I started feeling validated and worthy.  She understood why I felt the way I did and helped me process all the trauma and turmoil I was holding inside … Sandra never judged me, her quiet manner helped.  She made me realise that I was stronger than I thought … It was like Sandra was reaching out and holding onto me as I started my journey to heal my mind and calm my demons … I started to realise the counselling was giving me the time and space that I needed to help me understand myself better and to heal. Sandra has made me see and realise that I am valued as a human being worthy of the help. I am grateful and thankful Sandra never gave up on me even when I wanted to give up on myself.”

Training, qualifications & experience

Along with running my private practice, I work part-time with a community interest company delivering counselling and counselling training at diploma level.

I retrained to become a Person Centred Counsellor in 2018.  Prior to that, I spent 2 years as a volunteer befriender with a UK-wide family support charity, 16 years being a full-time stay-at-home mum to my three children and 14 years in the world of engineering studying and then working in research and latterly industry.

I offer post-qualifying experience having worked with children and young people aged 6 to 17 in primary and secondary schools settings on a voluntary basis with a leading UK-wide school counselling charity and employed basis with a Scotland-wide counselling social enterprise, and adults aged 18-70 in a third sector generic counselling service and a university-based counselling clinic.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
