About me

'Each moment is an opportunity to make a fresh start' ~  Pema Chodron

Hello and welcome.

Counselling and Psychotherapy offer an opportunity to explore concerns, challenges or anxieties you may be experiencing. You may be feeling overwhelmed or stuck, unable to make sense of things. Having someone to talk to, in confidence, can help identify obstacles and facilitate change. My non-judgemental approach encourages explorations of your beliefs and values and also encourages your curiosity about different ways of being in the world.

How I work:

I practise as an integrative counsellor, although my foundation framework is psychodynamic therapy. This means I listen carefully to your previous experiences, your understanding of them and how this may affect your present life, your sense of identity and sense of belonging. I also integrate behavioural techniques and attachment theory into my work.

I work with you to help you understand that change is possible, and I accompany you on this journey. The therapeutic relationship is intended to be healing, supportive and at times challenging. It is an opportunity to take the time and to make the space in your life to reflect and gain insight, to experience that change is possible. At the heart of change is the process of understanding of oneself and honouring that understanding.

I look forward to accompanying you on your journey.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • MBACP (Accredited)
  • Registered MBACP
  • Counselling Diploma
  • CRUSE Bereavement ABC foundation course
  • PGCE, The University of Southampton
  • BA (Hons English and American Literature), Echols Scholar, The University of Virginia USA
  • DBS checked/Fully insured
  • Trained to work online with video platforms and telephone therapy (BACP and The Open University)

I have worked as a CRUSE bereavement volunteer, and  a volunteer at a hospice working specifically with those impacted by brain tumours. I continue to work at a hospice and at counselling service.

Before I trained as a counsellor, I was a teacher and writer for 25 years. I feel counselling is a natural progression of the skills and experience I have cultivated working with people in education and the arts. I believe the common thread running through teaching, writing and counselling is understanding how people of any age perceive themselves, the world, others and how they relate to all of this. Everyone can be the author of their own story.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
