About us
Headway North Staffordshire is a registered charity that supports acquired brain injury (ABI) survivors and their loved ones.
An ABI is an injury caused after birth through trauma, stroke or disease, e.g. a tumour.
For many, an acquired brain injury can be a life changing experience that brings challenges such as:-
- Anxiety, low mood or frustration,
- Changes in personality,
- Memory concentration or communication difficulties.
- Stress for loved ones.
Our counselling service ensures that survivors and their loved ones can access counselling that is safe, confidential, inclusive, and responsive to individual needs. The service is delivered by qualified, appropriately supervised counsellors who understand the unique challenges associated with acquired brain injury (ABI).
Training, qualifications & experience
Headway North Staffordshire works with a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor who holds an MSc in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Distinction) and is a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
The counsellor has experience working across a range of settings including private practice, voluntary sector organisations, higher education environments, NHS placements, and online therapeutic platforms. This breadth of experience enables them to support individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.
Their approach is integrative, drawing on person-centred therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and solution-focused approaches. Sessions are tailored to the individual, offering both practical tools for managing present-day challenges and a supportive space for reflection and deeper exploration.
Together, the counsellor and client work collaboratively to explore thoughts and feelings, recognise patterns that may be affecting wellbeing, and move towards meaningful and sustainable change at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
Member organisations *
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
