About us

Charis Counselling Brighton is an independent counselling service born out of a desire to serve Brighton, Hove and surrounding areas by offering quality professional therapeutic care to the local community. We are here for those who wish to seek support within a caring and supportive environment.

We are trained in talking and creative therapies. The team can provide short-term and long-term general counselling covering topics around anxiety, depression, relationships, and abuse. We work with adults, and 16+ teens. Additionally we can offer Couples Therapy, Dance Movement Psychotherapy and Creative Arts Therapy which are all available with our specialist trained therapists. We may have a limited number of spaces for children dependent on therapist availability.

We work with both individuals and couples on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully. We can provide remote counselling via telephone or Zoom and face to face sessions are based mainly in Hove.

Training, qualifications & experience

Our therapists have different backgrounds, training, and experience which helps us bring a unique counselling experience suited to client needs.

The range of qualifications across the team include: Person Centred Counselling, Pastoral Counselling, Dance Movement Psychotherapy, Person Centred Creative Arts Therapy, Integrative Therapy, Humanistic Counselling, Online Counselling,  Couples Therapy, Bereavement Counselling, and Individual and Group Clinical Supervision.

We are experienced in working with anxiety, stress, relationship issues, loss and bereavement, pregnancy loss, infertility, depression, childhood and adult trauma, domestic violence, eating disorders, addictions, low self esteem and identity, spiritual issues and faith, redundancy, as well as  working with the disadvantaged to build resilience and hope.  We also have many years of experience in working with churches who want help for their members and parishioners.

Most of our team also work in other fields of people care, including helping those who have been homeless get back on to their feet,  supported housing for long term mental health, addictions, team building, pastoral support for teenagers, bariatric issues, and areas of wellbeing. The knowledge and experience from these different fields of work add to our ability to understand where people are coming from and to offer non-judgmental compassion whatever the situation.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.
