About me
I'm Carolyn, an integrative counsellor and coach. I work online and face to face in King's Cross and Clapham and online.
I'm no stranger to life's challenges. Before counselling, I made TV programmes. It was an intensely pressured world. Learning how to navigate the harder stretches in both my work and home life has deepened my resilience and my sense of my own agency. Helping you reclaim yours is central to my approach.
Some people arrive with something definite: a change, a loss, a decision, or a pattern that keeps repeating. Others just know something isn't right, and hasn't been for a while. Either is reason enough, and you don't have to have it well worded before you get in touch.
I begin by listening to you, to your story, and to the places you feel stuck. Sessions are unhurried and led by what feels most relevant and important to you, at your pace.
I work as both a counsellor and a coach. Counselling is the inner work: what's underneath, the past, the patterns, and the feelings and needs that are hard to name. As those settle, coaching is the forward pull: what you want, and trying things out in the world. We move fluidly between the two, in one relationship.
I draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems and Compassionate Communication, as they're useful to you. The work is deeply compassionate and it's also practical and for the real world.
I'm not a blank screen: I bring warmth and real curiosity about who you are and what matters to you. I work with adults of all ages and from all backgrounds, and I welcome LGBTQ+ clients.
We can start with a free twenty-minute call, a chance to meet each other properly and for you to decide whether this feels like a fit. No pressure either way.
Training, qualifications & experience
I've been practicing Compassionate Communication (Nonviolent Communication) for twenty-two years, twelve of them as a trainer. That's where my deep listening comes from.
Before I trained as a counsellor, I spent twenty years making television documentaries telling people's stories.
I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Coaching from the University of East London, with Distinction. I'm a Level 2 trained Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner, and a Registered Member of the BACP, registration number 419900. My earlier degrees are an MA in Media/Film and a BA in Cultural Studies.
I work within the Personal Consultancy Model, which is what lets counselling and coaching sit together in one relationship, rather than being two separate things.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
