About me

Do you feel anxious, overwhelmed, not good enough, unconfident?  Are you exhausted from the battles in your head, avoiding emotions but wondering why you are always on red alert?

I can help!

Or perhaps you feel lost, have forgotten who you are after years of trying desperately to fit in, always trying to please those around you.

You deserve a place to off load, someone to help you make sense of the behaviours that you have learned along the way in an attempt to feel safe.

I can help!

Who Am I and How I Will Help?

I’m Andrea, a 50 something year old , who has been through her own 'stuff' in years gone.  I huge advocate of empowering people who feel they have lost their way in life.

I am a qualified and accredited counsellor with a grounding in Person-Centred Counselling.  I am trained and specialised in attachment which means I help people like you understand the impact their childhood has had on their adulthood.

Attachment theory underpins who we all are.  You were not born “needy,” or “anxious,” or “people pleasing” or “mistrusting,” or “avoidant” …..  The way we are treated in childhood creates a blueprint for how we believe others will respond to us and how we must show up in the world to feel safe and loved.  If you choose to work with me, we will slowly make sense of your past and how your early relationships are affecting your world today.

I have worked extensively with people who have experienced any form of domestic abuse and trauma - whether that’s childhood experiences, sexual abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse or emotional narcissistic abuse including coercive control.

I regularly help people with anxiety, relationship problems, grief, low self-esteem and lacking in confidence.  I can help you take control of negative, anxious thoughts and difficult emotions, increase your self-worth and learn how to set healthy boundaries.

Fundamentally I want you to know you are not alone. Throughout our sessions, I will help you gain clarity, control of your feelings, create stronger boundaries, emotional resilience, and a happier you.  Reaching out for help takes courage but we will move at your pace, and I will never judge, criticise or shame you.

If you feel ready to begin your journey to a happier you, I'd love to be the one to help you.

I offer counselling in person and online sessions.  My private practice ("Andrea Ryan Counselling") is based in Lytham, Lancashire and the room is fully accessible.

What is therapy with me like?

I will not be telling you what to do, feel or think because you know you better than anyone.  I will help you unlock the answers however and build trust in yourself, your feelings and your responses.

Healing will start when you feel safe, seen, heard and accepted. There is no one size fits all in therapy because we are all different, unique and imperfect.   We are not aiming to fix you because you are not broken, despite how you may feel right now.  We are aiming to make sense of your world and help you feel good enough again.

My approach is always gentle, compassionate and inquisitive.  I will be curious so I get to know you, your learned behaviours and how you respond to the world.  You will receive a very warm and nurturing environment without judgement.  There is nothing you can say to me that I will judge you for and that I probably haven’t heard already.  I will ask questions and bring things into your awareness so you can decide if those actions still serve you well.

I will draw on my experiences and training in attachment and person-centred counselling, but I use many different therapeutic approaches depending on what fits you best.

I know how it feels to be the client, trying to piece myself back together.  No matter what you bring into the room, you will always be accepted for who you are and I will meet you wherever you are so we can start figuring things out together.

Therapy can be serious and deep, yes, but it can also be warm, human, and real.  There can be space for laughter, connection, and moments of lightness in sessions too. And if I do something you don’t like or agree with, I’d ask you to be honest with me and tell me about it.  That will enable our therapeutic relationship to deepen and be more real.

If you would like to know more, I can offer a free 15-minute introductory call or session so you can get a feel for me and whether you think I am the right person to support you.  No pressure, just a chance to ask me anything you want to and see if I am right for you.

I hope to offer you a space to untangle, understand, and maybe even start to feel like yourself again.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
