About me

I have been working as an NHS Counsellor in Blaenau Gwent doctors' surgeries for 11 years, covering Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Brynmawr, Aberbeeg and Cwm, seeing clients with mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and stress, relationship issues, bereavement and loss, adjustment to illness and disability, and self-esteem issues, for up to six sessions.

I combine a person-centred approach, to build the counselling relationship, with Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, to modify thinking styles and behaviour, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, to build on personal strengths and resources.

I taught AQA Level 3 Counselling to adults at Coleg Gwent Ebbw Vale for 9 years, covering Egan's Skilled Helper Model; 3 approaches to counselling: Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and CBT, and units on Grief and Loss, Counselling in Organisations, Transactional Analysis, and Brief Therapy.  I then taught AQA Level 4 Counselling at Coleg Gwent Newport for a year, preparing students for their Supervised Case Studies.

I supervised a group of volunteer counsellors for Cruse Bereavement Care in Cardiff for 2 years, and have been supervising two groups of student counsellors on placement at MIND Merthyr and the Valleys for the last 4 years.  I also provide ad hoc individual supervision for  students.

I have provided Personal Therapy for several university students who are required to complete 10 sessions as part of their course requirement.

I provided counselling to the Blaenau Gwent Active Living Project, designed to combat obesity and promote healthy living, and have a personal interest in the relationship between food and mental health.

I am a Reiki Master, and have taught Reiki at adult education centres. I take part in a monthly Reiki share group, which helps me to relax in a caring, supportive, and fun environment. I always explore a variety of relaxation techniques with clients, as I feel the ability to relax is so helpful in confronting everyday stresses.

I love walking with the local Ramblers, and believe in the value of physical activity, contact with nature, and social time, to lift the spirits.

Member organisations

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accessibility

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
