About me

Please note I am currently working online only.

Hello & welcome to my profile. I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist with 20+ years experience of offering psychotherapy & counselling to individuals in Edinburgh and East Lothian.

I have spent all of my adult life working with people as I am fascinated by what it means to be human and deeply interested in the suffering that is part of the human condition.  Before training as a psychotherapist I worked as a community development worker in Glasgow, Edinburgh & abroad.

Life presents each of us with times and experiences that can be challenging or painful and which may activate underlying issues that we may have been previously unaware of.  Psychotherapy or counselling provides a safe space where we can be listened to and met in such a way that we can begin to explore our current difficulties and look at how they may be connected to experiences in the past. Through this process, the potential for healing, transformation and greater fulfilment in life becomes available to us.

As a psychotherapist & counsellor, the most important element of my practice is the relationship that you and I create together.  A safe and trusting relationship can provide the security and freedom from which to explore, discover and learn more about yourself and the issues that may have brought you into therapy. To enable this safety to develop, I provide a sensitive, accepting and deeply attuned presence and listening to you and your difficulties.

My areas of special interest-

I have a particular interest in early childhood trauma, how this is held in the body and how this affects the unfolding of a person’s journey in life. I am interested in how the patterning/imprinting we may experience in our early relationships shapes the way that we are in the world, influences our sense of self, inhibits our connection to our own life force and influences the kind of difficulties and experiences we may encounter in life eg attachment or relationship issues, abuse, loss, mental health challenges like anxiety, depression or low self-esteem etc. I work with this imprinting at a somatic level using a slow pace to track the felt sense in the body as a way of complementing the more rational understanding we may gain through talking through the issues.

I have spent the last ten years or so learning & practising Daoist meditation and Qi Gong and it is this deep exploration of the relationship between body, mind and spirit as well as an interest in biodynamic craniosacral therapy that informs my practice as a psychotherapist. I work relationally, paying attention to what is happening between myself and you the client in the moment as well as working with the body in depth, noticing how our story and experience may be held there, and also working with dreams and imagery if appropriate.

If any of this resonates with you please get in touch.

Training, qualifications & experience

MA English Literature & Language
Postgraduate Certificate in Community Education (Youth & Community Work)
Certificate in Transpersonal Skills & Perspectives (1999 -Transpersonal Psychology Scotland)
Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Psychotherapy (2007 - Centre for Transpersonal Psychology, London)
UKCP registered (2007)

I am an experienced UKCP registered and accredited psychotherapist and counsellor. In addition to my core training in Transpersonal Psychology, and as part of my ongoing personal and professional development over the years, I have also attended trainings in authentic movement, CRM - Comprehensive Resource Model, and various workshops with Animas Valley Institute on the connection between psyche and nature. I have also done work on nervous system healing online with Irene Lyon. All of this experience combined enables me to work creatively at depth with early trauma and cPTSD which may have symptoms of dissociation and shutdown/freeze or fight/flight. I work with this nervous system activation by using grounding techniques alongside a slow paced gentle attention to somatic experience through the felt sense in the body.

Further information

I am interested in how early relational or intergenerational trauma may be held unconsciously in the body as patterns of tension and how bringing awareness at a somatic level may enable these tensions to dissolve. I work with this early trauma using a very slow pace, paying attention to the felt sense in the body as a way of guiding the work and opening the process to what needs to come into consciousness.
