Supervision details

I am a qualified and BACP accredited counsellor (13yrs), clinical supervisor and teacher. I have worked as a counsellor in primary and secondary schools for over 15 years with children, young people, families and school staff, in a therapeutic role, but also mediating, resolving conflict and improving student attendance and attainment.

I began my career in counselling volunteering for the Samaritans in 1998, gaining my first counselling certificate, whilst working full time in financial services.  Whilst working towards my counselling qualifications in 2007 I began working in school across East Cleveland as a therapist with students, school staff and families, with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma and abuse, regularly attending multiagency meetings.

In 2011 I set up a school counselling service in an ethically diverse school in the Northwest  giving me valuable experience of multi-cultural issues affecting young people. I have undertaken work at  Barnardos with child sexual exploitation, and have experience of working with the trauma bond, and the most vulnerable young people.

I currently work as a clinical supervisor for Barnardo’s, supporting a team of counsellors working with children and young people, and as a Schools Engagement Trainer for The Anna Freud Centre.  I deliver the Senior Lead Mental Health Training and Link programme, ensuring that staff have increased knowledge of Mental Wellbeing, and are supported and equipped with resources for their roles.

I have a PCGE, and taught Counselling at Degree and BA level for 2 years, so am familiar with the teaching aspect of education and the challenges staff face. I am able to write and deliver appropriate course material, monitor progress, accurately mark work and promote academic growth. I have successfully written and delivered group work in primary and secondary schools, on subjects such as managing anxiety, anger and resilience.

My therapeutic modality is Pluralism, which allows counsellors to use a variety of interventions agreed with the client. I believe the student knows what the best type of therapy for them is, and while building a therapeutic relationship, this gives them the autonomy to direct the intervention. Bringing in different techniques, such as therapeutic play or CBT is intrinsic to this modality, the appropriate technique emerges as relational depth builds. I draw from experience and training in other modalities to integrate ideas into my counselling practice, often when clients become “stuck”. I use open fluid, and reflective ways of engaging clients in counselling and have a special interest in early attachment, childhood illness and mental health. I use creative therapies and play to work psychotherapeutically with children, groups and families.

I completed a MA in counselling Children and Young People at Nottingham university and my research focused on “the factors that contribute towards the drop off in attendance to counselling in young men aged 11-16. This has given me a unique insight into how young men engage in therapy, and the goals they wish to achieve. My additional training has given me extensive knowledge of child development, SEND, specific mental health issues and appropriate interventions within an educational setting.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
